Question about custom passive.

Alright I got this great idea for a custom passived skill, I took thorns aura and change the radius to 1 (So it only effects the person who has it). Its supposed to trigger a % chance when hit, Can I just change the % chance of thorns aura and use,

Unit starts the effect of an ability
          Ability = thorns aura

To tell when it triggers?

Targets allowed: self


Auras aren't cast, they just happen.
Every 1.0 seconds, pick all units nearby that have the buff.
Though, with one single unit only... you already know when it happens: always.
