Tropical Storm Zeta tied a record for the latest developing named storm when it formed Friday in the open ocean, another surprising turn in an already infamous 2005 Atlantic hurricane season.
Although the National Hurricane Center said Zeta is not expected to develop into a hurricane or threaten land, Zeta is significant because it came a month after the official Nov. 30 end to the busy hurricane season. Zeta is the 27th named storm of the season.
But don't rush out and stock up on supplies yet, said Don Faulkner, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Mobile.
"It's off the coast of Africa, about 1,100 miles southwest of the Azores," he said. "It is not going to get anywhere close to us. I suspect it'll be gone in a couple of days."
