Spell Question

I need to make a spell similar to Torrent from DOTA, basiclly after a certain amount of time a huge ass splash throws a victim into the air and they are slowed when they hit the ground.

Anyone know what spell that based on. or how to make it so impale will only go as far as its target even if that target is like right up close to the person?

It doesn't use impale. It is a completely triggered spell. You change the units' flying height over time.

Well thats sexy, now lets pretend i still needed impale or something like it to stop at a certain point despite its range. I'm trying to make a chain impale, that will bounce from enemy to enemy impaling them and anyone caught between them, but the impale spell goes its entire length, it doesn't ever just stop at the opponent.
