Tyson Fury narrowly avoided one of the biggest upsets in combat sports history to beat Francis Ngannou by a split decision in their heavyweight clash in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The WBC champion was knocked down in the third round by the former UFC fighter – competing in his first professional boxing match – before ultimately going the distance and claiming a points victory over 10 hugely competitive rounds.

The Brit was judged to have won 96-93, 95-94 on two of the three scorecards. Ngannou came out victorious on the other, 95-94.

The result maintains Fury’s unbeaten record with a fight against WBO, WBA and IBF heavyweight champion, Oleksandr Usyk now on the horizon before the end of the year.
