if you want "quality", go for after effects and/or final cut
if you want "simple" go with [strikethrough]windows movie maker[/strikethrough] apple's equivalent

The best video editor for AVCHD no doubt is Premiere pro CS5.5. With Nvidia cards it supports CUDA, so the AVCHD editing is accelerated with the Mercury playback engine. Try out the trial from Adobe's site.
