Almost one in five young American adults has a personality disorder that interferes with everyday life, and even more abuse alcohol or drugs, researchers reported Monday in the most extensive study of its kind.

The disorders include problems such as obsessive or compulsive tendencies and anti-social behavior that can sometimes lead to violence. The study also found that fewer than 25 percent of college-aged Americans with mental problems get treatment.

One expert said personality disorders may be overdiagnosed. But others said the results were not surprising since previous, less rigorous evidence has suggested mental problems are common on college campuses and elsewhere.

Experts praised the study's scope _ face-to-face interviews about numerous disorders with more than 5,000 young people ages 19 to 25 _ and said it spotlights a problem college administrators need to address.

Either they got the numbers mixed up and it should say 4 in 5, or TH naturally attracts more of those "1".

Either way, I can but confirm this study from experience :p

Wow, just cuz you don't fit the mold established by media you have to have a personality disorder.

A personality disorder is a serious thing and goes well beyond being a "character flaw" or eccentricity. I wouldn't say that the 1 in 5 figure is accurate, but if there are environmental factors that lead to the manifestation of these traits, then they need to be identified and dealt with. Specifically, I think it is time to consider the ramifications of the college environment.

How the hell are you tying this into Democracy?

On Topic: Social Disorders my ass, granted their are some serious ones out there, and no disrespect to sufferers from those. However so many people get incorrectly labeled by hasty doctors, and parents who don't know what discipline is, and want an excuse. Screw that 1 in 5 malarkey.

you sound like one of those parents who blame video games for shootings like Columbine.

I suppose you want to make college illegal now because some kids might drink and get high without adult supervision.

And the pussification of America continues.....

In terms of symptoms, that 1 in 5 statistic might be accurate. The real issue is whether or not these symptoms can be attributed to genuine personality disorders. I don't think that they can be.

I have nothing against that sort of experimentation in itself. My only want is for people to approach alcohol and other drugs with the benefit of knowledge and forethought.

And the pussification of America continues.....

Maybe there has been a softening of America. When people begin to think that ignoring an issue is better than confronting it, I can't help but wonder what might be in store for the future.

I do not consider statisitics like this to be credible. What you're seeing is a byproduct of our society (USA). There is no doubt that some people genuinely suffer from personality disorders, but it is certainly not 1 in 5. People need to stop putting themselves (or get put by others) into boxes so easily.

You're what you think you are. Reality is what you make of it. The meaning of life is whatever you want it to be.
