Discussion A way to detect if an handle is invalid

Maybe most of you already know but you can't store a "null" handle in an hashtable, neither an invalid handle, for example an handle which was destroyed but not setted to null.

I've just realized recently we can use that for safety checks.

JASS:
library CheckHandles initializer onInit

globals
    private hashtable HashT
endglobals

function IsGroupValid takes group whichGroup returns boolean
    return SaveGroupHandle(HashT,0,0,whichGroup)
endfunction

private function onInit takes nothing returns nothing
    set HashT = InitHashtable()
endfunction

endlibrary

Note that i'm perfectly aware about the priority of module initializer.
And yes, i could initialize the hashtable in the global declaration.
And ofc it might have better ways for specifics handles, like for units (GetUnitTypeId(<unit>) != 0)

What you think about that ?
A such library may exist ?

If it's really obvious, then amen, at least it wasn't for me :p

JASS:
function IsHandleValid takes handle h returns boolean
    return GetHandleId(h) != 0
endfunction

Try?

That was a nice idea but it doesn't work, it displays "true".

JASS:
library CheckHandles initializer onInit

globals
    private hashtable HashT
endglobals

function IsGroupValid takes group whichGroup returns boolean
    return SaveGroupHandle(HashT,0,0,whichGroup)
endfunction

function IsHandleValid takes handle h returns boolean
    return GetHandleId(h) != 0
endfunction

private function onInit takes nothing returns nothing
    local group g = CreateGroup()
    call DestroyGroup(g)
    set HashT = InitHashtable()
    call TriggerSleepAction(1.)
    if IsHandleValid(g) then
        call BJDebugMsg("true")
    else
        call BJDebugMsg("false")
    endif

endfunction

endlibrary

Probably because the id isn't recycled (g isn't null), it returns a valid integer.

EDIT :

This works properly :

JASS:
function IsAgentValid takes agent whichAgent returns boolean
    return SaveAgentHandle(HashT,0,0,whichAgent)
endfunction

But i would a prefer a specific function for each type though.

What purpose would this serve?

JASS:
globals
    integer i = 0
endglobals

function DoSomethingCallback takes nothing returns nothing
    set i = i + 1
endfunction

function DoSomething takes group g returns integer
    set i = 0
    //if g != null then
    if IsAgentValid(g) then
        call ForGroup(g,function DoSomethingCallback)
        return 5 / i //without IsAgentValid, this will divide by 0.
    endif
    return 5
endfunction

function Test takes nothing returns nothing
    local group g = CreateGroup()
    call DestroyGroup(g)
    call DoSomething(g) //Oops!  Someone passed a non-null, but non-existant group!
endfunction

It returns false if the agent is null or is a ghost one like in my example showed before or your's, and true only if he is valid.

JASS:

function isHandleValid takes handle whichHandle returns boolean // you guys should use more descriptive arguement names. Even in examples. :/
     return whichHandle != null
endfunction

?

A variable with destroyed group does not have the value of null.

Exactly, without benchmark it's pretty obvious that IsAgentValid is lightning fast, probably only 2 time slower than a variable setting.
I already use it instead of comparing to null (if i don't already need to store the argument in an hashtable ofc).

@Lyerae : So what, should i add the comment, "return true if handle is valid, and false if it is not", seems really obvious :p

No, but [ljass]integer index[/ljass] is better than [ljass]integer i[/ljass] (as an example).

Stop whining really.

I assume you wanted to say that since long time ago, but here it's pretty pointless, choice an other thread :D

Back on topic, i see that's not obvious so, at least for all persons which have posted here, i will make a such library then.
But in an other hand, it should be used for personal codes only, since it's easy to inline it, hmm maybe as a sample ?

Seriously? :nuts:

'i' is a standard name known to be used for an index, or iterator. Just the name of the function is enough to know what it's going to take and what it's going to do.

The code is not complicated, and sometimes simple code is the best.

I just want to say that in Darthfett's example, it will divide by 0 also if the group is empty or at least full of ghost units only.

    Signatures can be edit in your account profile. As for the old stuffs, I'm thinking it's because Blizzard is now under Microsoft, and because of Microsoft Xbox going the way it is, it's dreadful.

    Crazy how much 3d printing has come in the last few years. Sad that it's not as easily modifiable though
  • Varine Varine:
    I bought an Ender 3 during the pandemic and tinkered with it all the time. Just bought a Sovol, not as easy. I'm trying to make it use a different nozzle because I have a fuck ton of Volcanos, and they use what is basically a modified volcano that is just a smidge longer, and almost every part on this thing needs to be redone to make it work
  • Varine Varine:
    Luckily I have a 3d printer for that, I guess. But it's ridiculous. The regular volcanos are 21mm, these Sovol versions are about 23.5mm
  • Varine Varine:
    So, 2.5mm longer. But the thing that measures the bed is about 1.5mm above the nozzle, so if I swap it with a volcano then I'm 1mm behind it. So cool, new bracket to swap that, but THEN the fan shroud to direct air at the part is ALSO going to be .5mm to low, and so I need to redo that, but by doing that it is a little bit off where it should be blowing and it's throwing it at the heating block instead of the part, and fuck man
  • Varine Varine:
    I didn't realize they designed this entire thing to NOT be modded. I would have just got a fucking Bambu if I knew that, the whole point was I could fuck with this. And no one else makes shit for Sovol so I have to go through them, and they have... interesting pricing models. So I have a new extruder altogether that I'm taking apart and going to just design a whole new one to use my nozzles. Dumb design.
  • Varine Varine:
    Can't just buy a new heatblock, you need to get a whole hotend - so block, heater cartridge, thermistor, heatbreak, and nozzle. And they put this fucking paste in there so I can't take the thermistor or cartridge out with any ease, that's 30 dollars. Or you can get the whole extrudor with the direct driver AND that heatblock for like 50, but you still can't get any of it to come apart
  • Varine Varine:
    Partsbuilt has individual parts I found but they're expensive. I think I can get bits swapped around and make this work with generic shit though
