Hi there... long time no see

I keep getting a ad/banner at the top of every page i load with a browser, It's related to "anchor free" or "hotspot shield" software, I have run all my antispyware/virus/malware programs and it stil appears

also sometimes i get a popup to an anchor free page (also about software)

I haven't even installed anything to do with anchor free or hotspot so don't know where it's comming from or where its situated.

any ideas on what to do?

Have you scanned with Malwarebytes? If not then do so.

Same Issue

Running Vista Home Premium, the Hotspot by Anchor Free banner appears on every browser that I've tried. I have been unable to find any references to it in the registry, or even a folder associated with Anchor Free or Hotspot anywhere in the computer. I looked through browser add-ins for Internet Explorer and could not find any reference to it there either.

Any help in tracking down the source of this banner would be greatly appreciated.

I'd see if Spybot Search & Destroy picks up anything.

SOLVED with a catch...

Just an update on this: I ran HiJack This on the machine and removed 23 items. HiJack this, most of which were "file missing" situations, but there was one BHO that I actually removed. :D However, HiJack This errored out when writing the log file, so I can't tell you exactly what BHO it was. :banghead: That means that I'm not absolutely positive that it was the BHO that did it.

What I am sure of is that the stupid banner is gone from all browsers now. just a disclaimer, don't use HiJack This if you don't know what you're doing, you can seriously screw up your computer.

If you want to try it you can find it at http://filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/

Hope this helps!

News portal has been retired. Main page of site goes to Headline News forum now
  • The Helper The Helper:
I am working on getting access to the old news portal under a different URL for those that would rather use that for news before we get a different news view.

    Easily done

https://www.thehelper.net/pages/news/ is a link to the old news portal - i will integrate it into the interface somewhere when i figure it out

    Need to try something
  • Ghan Ghan:
    Hopefully this won't cause problems.
  • Ghan Ghan:
    Hmm
  • Ghan Ghan:
I have converted the Headline News forum to an Article type forum. It will now show the top 20 threads with more detail of each thread.
  • Ghan Ghan:
    See how we like that.
  • The Helper The Helper:
I do not see a way to go past the 1st page of posts on the forum though
  • The Helper The Helper:
It is OK though for the main page to open up on the forum in the view it was before. As long as the portal has its own URL so it can be viewed that way I do want to try it as a regular forum view for a while
  • Ghan Ghan:
Yeah I'm not sure what the deal is with the pagination.
  • Ghan Ghan:
It SHOULD be there so I think it might just be an artifact of having an older style.
  • Ghan Ghan:
I switched it to a "Standard" article forum. This will show the thread list like normal, but the threads themselves will have the first post set up above the rest of the "comments"
  • The Helper The Helper:
I don't really get that article forum but I think it is because I have never really seen it used on a multi post thread
  • Ghan Ghan:
RpNation makes more use of it right now as an example: https://www.rpnation.com/news/
