Two friends and myself have been interested in Buddhism for quite some time now, and we decided to actively seek out a Buddhist temple in our neighborhood. We all agreed to dress respectfully (long sleeves, and no shorts) but i was curious if there are any other do's and dont's we should be aware of, The last thing we wish to do is offend.

Does anyone have any experience with this? :] thank you in advance!

I heard a lot of them don't speak english for traditional reasons. Like the one in... Rockford I think it is.

I don't know much about them aside from that. I'm sure you won't offend anyone there :p

Not sure but if I get around to it or if I remember I'll ask this Buddhist girl that goes to my school and get back to you.

But even if you do make a mistake I'm sure they'll understand that it's just lack of knowledge and they'll respect you for trying to get in touch with other cultures.

Rockford michigan? Thats the one i went too, it was fun, and they were very friendly! Im considering going back with my friend.

I've been to a few temple things; I knew nothing about how I was supposed to dress or anything and they didn't seem offended. They just explained the rules and customs to me; I think as long as you're not a dick about it and are at least willing to try and understand how it all works they won't reject you.

I would just stop by before you plan on touring it and ask about what you should do. I know that you're supposed to take your shoes off before entering a home or temple with a shrine of Buddha in it. I think, but not really sure, that you should wear black as well, but that might be a different religion (been a long time).

News portal has been retired. Main page of site goes to Headline News forum now
  • The Helper The Helper:
I am working on getting access to the old news portal under a different URL for those that would rather use that for news before we get a different news view.

    Easily done

https://www.thehelper.net/pages/news/ is a link to the old news portal - i will integrate it into the interface somewhere when i figure it out
  • Ghan Ghan:
    Need to try something
  • Ghan Ghan:
    Hopefully this won't cause problems.
  • Ghan Ghan:
    Hmm
  • Ghan Ghan:
I have converted the Headline News forum to an Article type forum. It will now show the top 20 threads with more detail of each thread.
  • Ghan Ghan:
    See how we like that.
  • The Helper The Helper:
I do not see a way to go past the 1st page of posts on the forum though
  • The Helper The Helper:
It is OK though for the main page to open up on the forum in the view it was before. As long as the portal has its own URL so it can be viewed that way I do want to try it as a regular forum view for a while
  • Ghan Ghan:
Yeah I'm not sure what the deal is with the pagination.
  • Ghan Ghan:
It SHOULD be there so I think it might just be an artifact of having an older style.
  • Ghan Ghan:
I switched it to a "Standard" article forum. This will show the thread list like normal, but the threads themselves will have the first post set up above the rest of the "comments"
  • The Helper The Helper:
I don't really get that article forum but I think it is because I have never really seen it used on a multi post thread
  • Ghan Ghan:
RpNation makes more use of it right now as an example: https://www.rpnation.com/news/
