ok, firstimer here so i wanna make sure itll work out nicely. this is an uber budget project of 350$ the parts ive listed here will be about 300$

Haves:

Haf 912 Coolmaster Case:
http://www.coolermaster-usa.com/landing/haf912/home.php

3TB External seagate go flex drive, that i will disassemble as use as the hard drive, all i need to do is format it right? and buy necessary cables.

about 4 old CD drives that work just fine. probably will just need cables...those havent changed right?

Wireless card, old sound card that i probably wont need...

And i think thats all of my haves, aside from Razer gear and an AOC 21" monitor

Buying:
A8-3850 AMD Llano processor, from a local store since its cheaper and they'll probably help me with the building for free...i hope:

MOBO:ASROCK A75 Pro 4 FM1

RAM:2x2Gbs(maybe 4 depending on my left over budget.

and PSU:Antec NEO ECO 620C 620W Continuous Power ATX12V v2.3 took forever to find a good PSU...or one that at least looks good...

Thats everything i need for a running PC correct? windows 7 will be my OS but im considering XP....not sure yet...will also co install linux as well so for questions...

1.Will it run? lol simple but i must ask
2.Is that power supply enough for a future addition of a GPU, more RAM and fans?
3.Any improvements? ill probably pick up an after market heatsink if my budget allows and more fans for the case as well
4.any further suggestions? Thanks for any answers.

the motherboard won't support an additional GPU - the 2nd pcie x16 slot is really only x4 as far as it is wired electrically, you would want atleast a x8 slot for a graphics card, the motherboard does NOT support IDE, so those old CD drives you likely won't be able to use

I would also recommend using 1.5v ram, since 1.65 v is 1.5 ram that failed some tests, so they bumped the voltage to accommodate it, kind of like a OC but to meet the basic specs instead of higher specs

380W will work for integrated graphics, but you won't be able to get a high-end graphics card, never mind 2 of them with that PSU (only 1 6-pin pcie connector, and it isn't advisable to use adapters for those as then the PSU will be overloaded)

reccomended part swaps:

use this psu as then you will be able to use atleast 1 high-end graphics card, and abandon the idea of using 2 at this budget point

use this ram - it's 1.5 volt and will only occupy 1 slot instead of 2, leaving you more room for future upgrades (still 4gb though)

found this ram someone on another forum told me about the whole 1.6V thing but thanks.

would there be any difference from using 1 stick of RAM as apposed to using 2?

And it looks like i linked the wrong PSU...ill be fixing it in a sec i copied the right info with the name n junk though...

As for the GPU id only be getting 1 additional one later on to be put into the x16 slot, dont think ill be needing cross fire

And as for the CD drive...would i be able to use my laptops CD drive? its probably new enough...should check it out..

if you can safely disassemble it, probably.. although I would suggest just installing whatever OS you want to install from a USB stick and then mounting an iso of whatever program install you want..

naw dropped it once and it popped out, i put it back in and it works just fine so now its easy to remove

Maybe you should think about some extra bucks for a high quality cooler, those things dont look too important but they really are.

ya aftermarket cooler was the first thing on my list for extra parts. Just wanted to make sure this build was going to work out just fine with limited issue.

no, since your previous board also has a PCIe 2.0 slot for a GPU, and this board is using the LGA 775 socket, which is like 3 generations old by now

ya i was gunna ask if there was anyway i could change the board in that bundle since they also have this one:
http://www.startechsandiego.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=675_727&products_id=3636

And that would give me a lot of room for upgrading since i could go up to an i7. and even if i couldnt exchange it or something i could just buy it and leave myself 100$ for a GPU and 50$ For ex....forgot about my PSU >< well id have around 50$ for a PSU then.

ya...go ahead and delete this...their website isnt up to date and the i3 bundle would cost me 200$ leaving really nothing left over...guess ima keep saving up

News portal has been retired. Main page of site goes to Headline News forum now
  • The Helper The Helper:
I am working on getting access to the old news portal under a different URL for those that would rather use that for news before we get a different news view.
  • Ghan Ghan:
    Easily done

  • The Helper The Helper:
https://www.thehelper.net/pages/news/ is a link to the old news portal - i will integrate it into the interface somewhere when i figure it out
  • Ghan Ghan:
    Need to try something
  • Ghan Ghan:
    Hopefully this won't cause problems.
  • Ghan Ghan:
    Hmm
  • Ghan Ghan:
I have converted the Headline News forum to an Article type forum. It will now show the top 20 threads with more detail of each thread.
  • Ghan Ghan:
    See how we like that.
  • The Helper The Helper:
I do not see a way to go past the 1st page of posts on the forum though
  • The Helper The Helper:
It is OK though for the main page to open up on the forum in the view it was before. As long as the portal has its own URL so it can be viewed that way I do want to try it as a regular forum view for a while
  • Ghan Ghan:
Yeah I'm not sure what the deal is with the pagination.
  • Ghan Ghan:
It SHOULD be there so I think it might just be an artifact of having an older style.
  • Ghan Ghan:
I switched it to a "Standard" article forum. This will show the thread list like normal, but the threads themselves will have the first post set up above the rest of the "comments"
  • The Helper The Helper:
I don't really get that article forum but I think it is because I have never really seen it used on a multi post thread
  • Ghan Ghan:
RpNation makes more use of it right now as an example: https://www.rpnation.com/news/
