No. It should look nice, but you can use the standard stuff that is already there.

I have never made a TD, so I doubt I would do very good making a tower. But I suppose I'll submit one if I make something I like.

Would a tower with triggers that are a bit too calculation-intensive to be practical for multiple players (too much slowdown with that many of the tower built) be acceptable?

It's not necessary. If it contributes to the implementation of your code (for example, having a raw code there that could change depending on the map) then it should be included to make it easy to import. However, if nothing will need to be customized to get the code functioning, then it is not required.
