Getting a new computer and i have a lot of files i want to transfer, specificly Firefox favs/passwords for sites and some settings for specific programs. Can i just copy folders onto my portable hard drive and then move them onto new computer? or should i just try to put all my passwords etc on a word document and do everything by hand.

All firefox related stuff is stored in your profile directory which is located in %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles in Windows XP. Easiest way to backup is to go to Start->Run, type in "%APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox", copy the Profiles folder to your portable HDD (or anywhere else) and restore it into "%APPDATA%\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox" after you install Vista.
Now different programs store their settings in different places and just copying their directory is not only a bad idea, but there is also a good chance that it won't work.
