Sci/Tech Spider Silk Could Weave Biodegradable Computer Chips

Spiders and some insects use silk to build strong webs and spin cocoons, and now scientists have figured out how to use the material for something even more amazing: electronic computer chips.

Many people have heard that spider silk is a sort of supermaterial: stronger than steel, tougher than Kevlar, and yet incredibly malleable and flexible. But the silk has other properties that make it ideal for use in electronic devices. Light can travel through a silk strand as easily as it does through a fiber optic cable.

“When we first tested spider silk, we didn’t know what to expect,” said physicist Nolwenn Huby of the Institut de Physique de Rennes in France. “We thought, ‘Why not try this as an optical fiber to propagate light?’”

Huby and her team were able to transmit laser light down a short strand of the silk on an integrated circuit chip. The silk worked much like glass fiber optic cables, meaning it could carry information for electronic devices, though it had about four orders of magnitude more loss than the glass. Huby said that with a coating and further development, the silk could one day have better transmission capabilities. She will present her results at this year’s Frontiers in Optics conference, Oct. 14 to 18 in Rochester, New York.

Man, that be sick, a Spider man computer made from Spider Silk. No wonder spider man can think so fast.

Just a question: if it's biodegradable, doesn't that mean it will need to be repaired constantly?

That depends.
It might be that it only degrades if it is combined with some kind of chemical, water maybe, or acid, or something.

But i dont really understand why they would need degradeable computer chips.
These chips consist mostly of metals and silicium which both can be recycled.

Maybe because, they Just wanna be famous or something like that.

They are looking for alternatives to those metals. Once found, they will process it, refine it, and produce cheaper electronics.

What if I told you that computers bought in the future are cheaper than your 8GB usb drive?

No thanks, my dislike for arachnids borders on the psychotic already, I don't want any part of them integrating into my computers...

Sometimes. Usually you don't get an entirely different computer every year, but change out parts that are outdated. There are instances, such as ensuring software works on whatever hardware specifications, that you may need one every year though. I usually just change certain parts out of mine, but the fact remains that there are circumstances where it's to some extent necessary.

And if this computer would be cheap and disposable, then yes, it would make sense to get a new all the time. I could see a kind of future where that's to some extent standard.

And at this point we're talking about something that has barely been tested. With appropriate applications, it could be very effective.

Maybe it would be effective . But still, how many Spiders and insects do they need to make one chip? How long would it take to make one. Well, and also It's a living thing. They aren't robots who can make silk when you want it. So Is It really worth It?

And besides, you can manufacture spider silk with the help of manipulations with goats and spider genes.

That might be another matter. But If animals are used for such thing hmm Well, if anybody "thinks they can convince me" then please go ahead.

How come you're so into recipes lately? Never saw this much interest in this topic in the old days of TH.net

Hmm, how do I change my signature?
  • tom_mai78101 tom_mai78101:
Signatures can be edit in your account profile. As for the old stuffs, I'm thinking it's because Blizzard is now under Microsoft, and because of Microsoft Xbox going the way it is, it's dreadful.

@tom_mai78101 I must be blind. If I go on my profile I don't see any area to edit the signature; If I go to account details (settings) I don't see any signature area either.

You can get there if you click the bell icon (alerts) and choose preferences from the bottom, signature will be in the menu on the left there https://www.thehelper.net/account/preferences

Crazy how much 3d printing has come in the last few years. Sad that it's not as easily modifiable though
  • Varine Varine:
I bought an Ender 3 during the pandemic and tinkered with it all the time. Just bought a Sovol, not as easy. I'm trying to make it use a different nozzle because I have a fuck ton of Volcanos, and they use what is basically a modified volcano that is just a smidge longer, and almost every part on this thing needs to be redone to make it work
  • Varine Varine:
Luckily I have a 3d printer for that, I guess. But it's ridiculous. The regular volcanos are 21mm, these Sovol versions are about 23.5mm
  • Varine Varine:
So, 2.5mm longer. But the thing that measures the bed is about 1.5mm above the nozzle, so if I swap it with a volcano then I'm 1mm behind it. So cool, new bracket to swap that, but THEN the fan shroud to direct air at the part is ALSO going to be .5mm to low, and so I need to redo that, but by doing that it is a little bit off where it should be blowing and it's throwing it at the heating block instead of the part, and fuck man
  • Varine Varine:
I didn't realize they designed this entire thing to NOT be modded. I would have just got a fucking Bambu if I knew that, the whole point was I could fuck with this. And no one else makes shit for Sovol so I have to go through them, and they have... interesting pricing models. So I have a new extruder altogether that I'm taking apart and going to just design a whole new one to use my nozzles. Dumb design.
  • Varine Varine:
Can't just buy a new heatblock, you need to get a whole hotend - so block, heater cartridge, thermistor, heatbreak, and nozzle. And they put this fucking paste in there so I can't take the thermistor or cartridge out with any ease, that's 30 dollars. Or you can get the whole extrudor with the direct driver AND that heatblock for like 50, but you still can't get any of it to come apart
  • Varine Varine:
Partsbuilt has individual parts I found but they're expensive. I think I can get bits swapped around and make this work with generic shit though
