The self-driving car could be available to consumers in 3-5 years, the head of Google’s autonomous driving project says. That’s the most optimistic timeframe yet. Other projections have been for 2020 and beyond, which still beats “probably not in our lifetime.”

The timeline came from Anthony Levandowski, Google’s product manager for autonomous driving, speaking at a Society for Automotive Engineers (SAE) conference in Washington last week. “I can’t tell you you’ll be able to have a Google car in your garage next year,” Levandowski said. But he added, “We expect to release the technology in the next five years. In what form it gets released is still to be determined.” Releasing technology is different than announcing a self-driving car going on sale in 3-5 years. The real challenge could be getting the self-driving car approved for use of public highways everywhere, not just the handful of states that allow self-driving cars for test purposes.

It’s a free country and if you want to mount a soap box and speak out in a public park, you can do it today. If you want to sell a motor vehicle, you have to meet an array of fuel-economy, stability, and crash safety tests, and those take time. Years sometimes. Self-driving cars would have to prove they can drive themselves, deal with jaywalking pedestrians, stop or at least slow when a crossing vehicle runs a red light, and deal with software glitches. Performance metrics for self-driving cars don’t exist yet and the Department of Transportation, which doesn’t offer bonuses for working at internet speed, may be more deliberate and methodical than Google.

Would not want.
Where is the fun if you cant drive your car yourself?
I could also just go by bus or train if i was too lazy to drive.

You must live in an area, where trains/buses go near the places you live/work/hang out. I have to drive 25 miles to go anywhere but shopping.

Public transportation is pretty good over here in general.
Takes me 40 minutes to get to the university from home, and that is because of the 10 minute walk across the large campus.
Unfortunately, the trains are late every other day or so. But on the other hand, cars can get into traffic jam also. The traffic used to be pretty bad in the morning here.

On a good day, 45 minutes to get to/from university because of 15 minute walk. 1 hr and 15m on a day with traffic.

Google cars are for those who can't drive. Would this satisfy your taste for the grip and feel of your driving wheel?

I dont think somebody who can not drive a car should be able to drive a self-driving car.
Because once the software has a problem or fails completely the driver must be able to control the car by hand.
I dont think any government will allow somebody without a drivers license to drive a self-driving car.

It will be more like a helping hand if you are a little intoxicated or sleepy.

Sure, but they still would be "ugly" with the roof-racks mounted on the cars.

the sensors will be integrated into the cars themselves once auto makers start to incorporate them into the designs, as opposed to being externally mounted as they currently are

so what if a person is intoxicated, and thus unable (legally) to drive a regular car - would they be allowed to drive a self-driving car?

P.S. - this could be bad if it was based on apple maps, maybe there should be a standard as to the maps used

deal with jaywalking pedestrians

jaywalking pedestrians should be run over - and most cars on the road are capable of doing that without any issues

A said "little" intoxicated, like 0.1 - 1.0 per mill, not like 2 per mill or above.
If you arent completely drunk but you arent sober either you can still drive, but its much more dangerous. This could "help" people who are slightly drunk and effectively reduce the number of crashes related to intoxication.
If you are so drunk you couldnt drive at all then it wouldnt make any difference if you had a drivers license would it?

I will quietly await the day when AI cars start revolting and driving people to places against their will.

And, turns out, they're all nice AI.
"Hey, car, I said to get me to burger king!"
"Yes, but the 4th of July fireworks begins in four minutes. I heard it'll be really great this year, I don't want you to miss out on it!"

AI: Anarchist's Intelligence. Quite fitting.

Signatures can be edit in your account profile. As for the old stuffs, I'm thinking it's because Blizzard is now under Microsoft, and because of Microsoft Xbox going the way it is, it's dreadful.

Crazy how much 3d printing has come in the last few years. Sad that it's not as easily modifiable though
  • Varine Varine:
I bought an Ender 3 during the pandemic and tinkered with it all the time. Just bought a Sovol, not as easy. I'm trying to make it use a different nozzle because I have a fuck ton of Volcanos, and they use what is basically a modified volcano that is just a smidge longer, and almost every part on this thing needs to be redone to make it work
  • Varine Varine:
Luckily I have a 3d printer for that, I guess. But it's ridiculous. The regular volcanos are 21mm, these Sovol versions are about 23.5mm
  • Varine Varine:
So, 2.5mm longer. But the thing that measures the bed is about 1.5mm above the nozzle, so if I swap it with a volcano then I'm 1mm behind it. So cool, new bracket to swap that, but THEN the fan shroud to direct air at the part is ALSO going to be .5mm to low, and so I need to redo that, but by doing that it is a little bit off where it should be blowing and it's throwing it at the heating block instead of the part, and fuck man
  • Varine Varine:
I didn't realize they designed this entire thing to NOT be modded. I would have just got a fucking Bambu if I knew that, the whole point was I could fuck with this. And no one else makes shit for Sovol so I have to go through them, and they have... interesting pricing models. So I have a new extruder altogether that I'm taking apart and going to just design a whole new one to use my nozzles. Dumb design.
  • Varine Varine:
Can't just buy a new heatblock, you need to get a whole hotend - so block, heater cartridge, thermistor, heatbreak, and nozzle. And they put this fucking paste in there so I can't take the thermistor or cartridge out with any ease, that's 30 dollars. Or you can get the whole extrudor with the direct driver AND that heatblock for like 50, but you still can't get any of it to come apart
  • Varine Varine:
Partsbuilt has individual parts I found but they're expensive. I think I can get bits swapped around and make this work with generic shit though
