Aren't we over-crowded enough without creating MORE life-forms? Don't we have enough people losing their jobs without trying to create MORE life-forms to do tasks people are losing their jobs to do in the first place?

Depending on whether these "artificial life"-forms are, aren't we running low enough on food, clean water and natural resources WITHOUT CREATING MORE LIFE FORMS TO NEED THESE THINGS?!

C'mon, people. 2 + 2 is not fish.

Some of "these things" are going to be creating those natural resources.

that pretty much sums it up "the reason!" @DogOfHavoc

Some of "these things" are going to be creating those natural resources.
I don't think so!

I really think most people didn't read the article. These developments are to help existing problems, not create new ones.

All solutions create newer problems that have to be addressed.

Yes, because messing with things we don't understand is always a good answer :)

I realize what they expect these kinds of scientific breakthroughs to "solve", but the problem is that they're never 100% sure of the fallout. It's impossible to be sure of something like that.

At this point, I think it's better to try something than to do nothing.

@Knight

Maby this time they will be used to adress some "minor problems". Fact is however, that as we do this our technology and abilities at this skill will increase. You know as well as I do it is just a matter of time some group of idiots starts doing the thing we, in this thread, have shown our concerns about.

Well is not only biofuels..

"Opponents of the controversial research claim the technology could lead to machines becoming "almost human".

But there would be no safety issues for a long time as any initial organisms would be very primitive and need large-scale life support in the lab, reports New Scientist."
