ok i read the big tut on AI but i still dont understand it. how do i make an AI for non melee map?

Essentially, you trigger it yourself, as the AI Editor is not meant for non-melee maps.

im building a tug o war map and i want the ai to build and research like a human player.

There are functions to order units to build other units, as well as order units to start researching. I'm guessing you're wondering if there's an easy way to tell units to 'build a unit in an open area', and the truth is that there isn't.

There is the option of creating regions, and having units build in pre-determined areas, which would limit you if there were units in the way, and other such problems.

If you're still VERY determined to create an AI, the best way is to start simple and expandable, and slowly expand.

It would be simply creating multiple different styles, and then using a few if-then conditions to determine what course of action they should take, based on their 'style'.

AI is messy, and there's no effective way to make things easy, other than to keep it expandable. Make it easy to change how something works, so you don't have to go back and rewrite code later.

can i have randomly selected interger? saying between 1-4 1 being build farm and, 2 research spell, 3 harvest and 4 attack with hero? and ever 30-60 seconds it choices between the two? but spread it out amongs many triggers?

I think it's better to create 4 types, like 4 sets. Meaning you create the triggers, for 1 ai. Means everytime this trigger set is randomed, it'll build, research, train a hero, learn the skill. If trigger set 2 is randomed, it'll research, build, learn the skill and train a hero. If 3, then yeah. So on and so forth.

Set integerVar = Random number between 1 and 4

Else If integerVar = 2
Then
Else If....
...
