By the time Trump talked about Haitian immigrants "eating dogs" and "eating the cats" on Tuesday night, the baseless claim had been thriving in right-wing corners of the internet.

Around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, tens of millions of television viewers watched as Donald Trump spread an unsubstantiated and racially charged rumor running wild online.

“In Springfield they’re eating dogs,” the former president said, referring to an Ohio city dealing with an influx of Haitian immigrants. “They’re eating the cats. They’re eating … the pets of the people that live there. And this is what’s happening in our country, and it’s a shame.”

The extraordinary moment — the airing of a claim worthy of a chain email while participating in a prime-time presidential debate — probably puzzled most of the 67.1 million people tuned in for Trump’s clash with Vice President Kamala Harris. But the rumor, which has been criticized as perpetuating racist tropes, was already thriving in right-wing corners of the internet and being amplified by those close to Trump, including his running mate, Sen. JD Vance of Ohio.

No one involved in Trump’s debate preparations or in a position to speak for his campaign agreed to discuss the strategy on the record or answer questions about how it mutated from a fringe obsession to a debate stage sound bite.

I normally try to stay out of political news but this is just too good, like something out of South Park.

'It just exploded': Springfield woman claims she never meant to spark false rumors about Haitians

The woman behind an early Facebook post that helped spark baseless rumors about Haitians eating pets told NBC News that she feels for the immigrant community.

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — The woman behind an early Facebook post spreading a harmful and baseless claim about Haitian immigrants eating local pets that helped thrust a small Ohio city into the national spotlight says she had no firsthand knowledge of any such incident and is now filled with regret and fear as a result of the ensuing fallout.

“It just exploded into something I didn’t mean to happen,” Erika Lee, a Springfield resident, told NBC News on Friday.

Lee recently posted on Facebook about a neighbor’s cat that went missing, adding that the neighbor told Lee she thought the cat was the victim of an attack by her Haitian neighbors.

Newsguard, a media watchdog that monitors for misinformation online, found that Lee had been among the first people to publish a post to social media about the rumor, screenshots of which circulated online. The neighbor, Kimberly Newton, said she heard about the attack from a third party, NewsGuard reported.

I confronted my conservative roommate about this hoax and talk about defensive. I am actually kind of scared because my roommate has a lot in common with a bunch of my friends who are actually believing the bullshit fox is saying. He is literally watching fox news 100 percent of the time he is not working or sleeping. Same with a bunch of my other friends. They are buying a bunch of guns and talking about revolution. Arming up against them - I ask him who they are and they are the government - they should be arming up against there news channel - FML!

Thehelper, why do you also keep posting articles from these dirty smear merchants too? There’s gotta be why better sources to use these days than any of the big named media companies. Where’s the segments or articles from alternative sources? Tim poole? The Lotus Eaters from the UK?

The bigger issue at hand, Is why did Springfield get inundated with 20,000 proud foreign Haitians? Who made the call? because I’m hearing both the residents and the cops were never asked or had a vote in the matter, and when you have that many all at once, there never going to melt into the surrounding culture.
It’s like randomly inserting a Haitian colony into a US city.

I know right and nobody is talking about it. You are the first person to post anything here like that. They did the same thing in Detroit.

The thing is that it is not a conspiracy it is actually how the system works. The local level does the laws so when you get an innundation of a different culture they can literally incorporate or take over. When the federal government does not recognize or respond to that when it completely changes everything about America that is a problem.

However, you have to explain that you cannot just throw out tabloid bullshit and have my roommate believing a bunch of fake news. There is a core problem but it is not being talked about anywhere credible.

Put some links in here do not be afraid to do so. I want to see what you are reading.

I just do not think there is any verifiable truth here in this one. It is so crazy. I told my roommate I cannot believe this came up this tabloid shit not even a federal government thing.

If it is a huge immigration issue why piggyback it on eating cats claim in a debate? Sounds like a bunch of people trying to defend a dumb ass thing. We have to be able to step back and say OK chill man - it is ok to take a breath.

You are absolutely right, it is like a literal south park sketch. One of my friends in China said he can't wait for Trump to be president and get his weekly jokes.

Now there's a lot of people coping by claiming Trump is making up these things so people talk about the real issues.

If Trump knew what the real issues are, he would have talked about them.

Anyways, this country is currently so fucked. People either demonize Trump or downright worship him and think he can do no wrong. Trump did some good things while he was President, most importantly he didn't get our troops sent to any new wars as well as some other decisions and bills he passed. But he also screwed up a lot and because of total lack of competence in the political system didn't manage to achieve much of what he promised.

What he did achieve though is gathering a bunch of loomies around himself that talk about eating cats and dogs. And now the poor guy is getting shot at... People talking about armed revolution... It's so crazy.

Yeah this is totally my generation. My roommate is and alot of my friends from high school are like minded all into whatever Fox News or Trump is saying. I have heard the words revolution a number of times in recent memory.

We need to seriously chill out. Whoever wins the presidency, the world isn't going to end.

We have some elderly guests that regularly come hang out at the bar at the end of the night, and every once in a while we don't see someone for a few weeks and then someone shows up with their obituary.
  • Varine Varine:
We usually let them do their memorials there in the morning if they want to and I'll make them some snacks and drinks. There was one guy named Tom that came in like every night and would sit by himself and get a bunch of soup and a glass of wine. idk why but he LOVED our fucking soup, like he would order a fucking quart of it at a time and would always get so sad when we stop doing it for the summer.

But he also loved our calamari, which is another thing I hate but it sells super well so I can't change it. There was one day he came in and was asking me how to make it, because he tried to at home once in the off season when we stop running it and he really wanted it lol
  • Varine Varine:
I think he's one of the only people I've made recipes for for free because he really wanted a broccoli cheddar, and it was like dude I don't have a recipe, it's just whatever I have, but here, this is how you do it
  • Varine Varine:
I don't think he ever figured out how to do the calamari in a pan though, like idk how to do that either. He was afraid of the at home deep fryers though and it's like yeah, that's fair, I am too
  • Varine Varine:
He was just such a sweet old man, we had two servers pregnant and they held a baby shower together, he was soooooo fucking excited to get to see a baby. Unfortunately he died a month or so before they were born
  • The Helper The Helper:
So I decided to Google some people that I had not seen or heard from in a while and sure enough one of my old best friends, we had a falling out years ago but whatever, find out he died of Pancreatic Cancer in January. I have also lost a few of my closer acquaintances from growing up the last year. Getting old - people die - I kinda thought it was going to be this way a few years ago....

    Forum running super slow again
  • Ghan Ghan:
Not really clear from the stats as to what is causing the slowness.
  • Ghan Ghan:
We get a lot of guest traffic so it may just be the load is getting too high and not from any particular source.
  • Ghan Ghan:
Looks like the server is maxed out on CPU.
  • Ghan Ghan:
Oh it looks like a lot of the traffic is Silkroad Forums. That domain isn't protected by Cloudflare.
  • Ghan Ghan:
But the old Silkroad site is still on its own server. I just had a test site set up on this server for it.
  • Ghan Ghan:
I just disabled that test site. Let's see if that helps the load.
  • Ghan Ghan:
    Looks much better already.
  • The Helper The Helper:
I had actually forgot about the Silkroad site. I had asked
  • The Helper The Helper:
SD Ryoko about it and he said the couple of people left on there really like it, that was a few years ago, maybe I should check back
  • jonas jonas:
I guess when you're getting old, and the last day of soup season draws near, you start wondering
  • jonas jonas:
will I make it to the start of the next season? or was this the last time I'll ever have my favorite dish?
  • The Helper The Helper:
