If it ever gets built, the 7.5-gigawatt Stratos data center project in Utah would dwarf the artificial intelligence infrastructure that’s been built to date. Covering 10,000 acres of cattle-grazing land north of the Great Salt Lake, it would arguably be the largest data center in the world.

That has many people in Utah concerned.

The developer behind the project is Kevin O’Leary, the real estate investor familiar to many as a star of the ABC television show Shark Tank (and also the villain in the 2025 movie Marty Supreme). He says the increasingly competitive race for AI dominance among hyperscaler companies like OpenAI, Anthropic, Amazon, Google, Meta, and Microsoft is paving the way for giant data centers like Stratos to become the new normal.

“They’re all going to be built like this because the economics are so brutal, you need scale,” he says.

 
The anti-AI crowd is going to lose. The benefits are too great to ignore this, and if the US doesn't step up, China will, which will be bad for the economic outlook for the US in the mid- and long-term.

That said, there's definitely room here to make some sensible changes to do these buildouts responsibly to avoid the most common concerns. The hysteria is unwarranted, but there are definite concerns around power and water usage that are addressable. This particular project notes the following:

The cooling system will have a closed-loop configuration that re-uses water rather than need constant refilling.

Stratos will produce all of the power it needs on site using natural gas from the nearby Ruby Pipeline.

That's a good start and will need to be verified. If things like this are handled responsibly, then I have no problem with these large datacenter projects. I believe it'll benefit humanity in the long term. Short term, we may see some disruptions, but that's been true throughout history.

    Yeah Tom, me too sorry for your loss buddy my mom told me she finds out her olds friend died from Google searching them. She had not talked to one of her old friends in a year and found out she died from Google. Also another one in the same session. RIP all of them my sincere condolences Tom

    We have some elderly guests that regularly come hang out at the bar at the end of the night, and every once in a while we don't see someone for a few weeks and then someone shows up with their obituary.

    We usually let them do their memorials there in the morning if they want to and I'll make them some snacks and drinks. There was one guy named Tom that came in like every night and would sit by himself and get a bunch of soup and a glass of wine. idk why but he LOVED our fucking soup, like he would order a fucking quart of it at a time and would always get so sad when we stop doing it for the summer.

    But he also loved our calamari, which is another thing I hate but it sells super well so I can't change it. There was one day he came in and was asking me how to make it, because he tried to at home once in the off season when we stop running it and he really wanted it lol

    He was just such a sweet old man, we had two servers pregnant and they held a baby shower together, he was soooooo fucking excited to get to see a baby. Unfortunately he died a month or so before they were born

    So I decided to Google some people that I had not seen or heard from in a while and sure enough one of my old best friends, we had a falling out years ago but whatever, find out he died of Pancreatic Cancer in January. I have also lost a few of my closer acquaintances from growing up the last year. Getting old - people die - I kinda thought it was going to be this way a few years ago....

    Not really clear from the stats as to what is causing the slowness.

    We get a lot of guest traffic so it may just be the load is getting too high and not from any particular source.
