North Korea has unveiled what it claims to be its first nuclear-powered submarine during an inspection by Kim Jong-un.
The dictator was photographed visiting the half-built 8,700-tonne vessel that will be reportedly capable of launching surface-to-air missiles.
Images released by the state’s official media agency on Thursday showed Kim touring the construction site alongside his 12-year-old daughter and suspected heir, Kim Ju Ae, along with a coterie of military officials.
Submarines are typically built from the inside out and, with the hull appearing to be largely complete, it could be seaworthy within months.
Moon Geun-sik, a former submarine officer and academic at Seoul’s Hanyang University, said the photos suggest the vessel’s engine and reactor are already in place.
