With her mother desperately in need of a transplant, Laura Ashworth told family and friends she wanted to donate one of her kidneys.

So when the 21-year-old died after an asthma attack, it seemed that the tragedy would at least give Rachel Leake a chance of a healthy new life.

But because Laura had not begun the formal process of becoming a "living donor," the authorities refused to let her mother receive her organs. Instead they went to strangers at the top of the waiting list.

This is suppose to protect the children who want to help their parents, but if the parent is heartless they'll kill their children to receive the healthy organs they hold. It's a sad story, but it needs to be enforced.

That's the retarded thing with these policies - they need to be reviewed on a damn case-by-case basis. If the daughter was going to donate the organ anyway but died (obviously not killed..), WHY THE HELL should what she had wanted to do not be respected?

Most likely because it was word for word, and not written on contract. So they think there might be a slight possibility she was killed, or something similar.
Or they just don't care.

Eh, i dunno.. an asthma attack does kinda sound suspicious..
Only 5,000 people die from asthma every year.
U.S. has 303,838,187 citizens.
Thats not even 1% of the population.
Not even half a percent, or half of a half percent.
It's 0.0000165% (rounded up)

Im sure its possible, but i'd be a little leery.

Many times donors change their mind at the last moment. A donor being a live gives the chance of that happening. Someone dead, is a sure donor (as in, their organs can be used).
Also, it could be desperate-ness. But in this case, the authorities are either just following the rules/laws/policy/etc.

The reason they gave was "Mr McNeil said all requests for "directed" organ donations were being turned down while a detailed ethical review was taking place."

Well obviously the chance of someone with severe asthma dying from it are much higher.
