Not technically new lol

AHH! I love it! It's computer name is Dino-puter, because the thing is as tall as my knee.

NVIDIA GEFORCE4 MX 440 128 mb
256 ram (1 problem)
CPU Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.00GHz
System Slots 5 PCI, 1 AGP

But I have 2 problems.

problem 1
My real ammount of ram is 512
But.. I cannot tell weather it's the ram or the slots because if I pull even one ram chip out it beeps at me and won't boot.

problem 2
I have a 6GB hard drive for my OS
But I also have a 40 GB hard drive for other stuff.
I set the jumpers for slave, and It shows up in device manager, but not in my computer.

Could someone help me with the first problem first, because I wanna play WoW xD

The second problem is my secondary problem..

Problem 1: Try switching around the RAM.

Was: RAM1 in SLOT1, RAM2 in SLOT2
To: RAM2 in SLOT1, RAM1 in SLOT2

And make sure you first open the locks on both ends of each RAM, then put it straight down on the ends until you hear two clicks (or 1 click for two clicks clicking the same time).

Problem 2: See if you can set the jumper to Auto or Cable Select.

Else, you need to know about connecting IDE hard drives. The jumper set to Slave is a big giveaway that you're using IDE hard drives. This link here tells you about Master/Slave relations. Here's a video on how to install a second hard drive. And here's how to connect two hard drives together.

so you tried all single-combinations of ram stick and slot? (there should be atleast 4 here)

and the drives should work if you have 1 set to slave and 1 set to master

I've tried every combo for ram.
and no, both are really old ha.
back when i had my compaq I had gotten them.

That is what confuses me.

Try this:

1. Right click on My Computer
2. Choose manage from the menu
3. Click on Disk Management in the Left Handed pane
4. Look for your drive in the Right Handed pane
5. Right click the drive and choose Change Drive Letter and Paths from the menu.
6. Set the drive letter you want and close out.

See if it works.

For the RAM problem, try running memtest86.

http://www.memtest86.com/

There's a free download. I use the floppy disk package. Basically all you have to do is insert the floppy, restart the computer, and boot from the floppy.

Let the test run for an hour or two, and see if you have any errors.

I ran this awhile back and determined that one of my old computer's RAM slots is faulty...whenever I'd switch the two RAM sticks around, only the same 1 slot would produce errors. Use similar logic to find your problem :)

News portal has been retired. Main page of site goes to Headline News forum now
  • The Helper The Helper:
I am working on getting access to the old news portal under a different URL for those that would rather use that for news before we get a different news view.
  • Ghan Ghan:
    Easily done
    +1
  • The Helper The Helper:
https://www.thehelper.net/pages/news/ is a link to the old news portal - i will integrate it into the interface somewhere when i figure it out
  • Ghan Ghan:
    Need to try something
  • Ghan Ghan:
    Hopefully this won't cause problems.
  • Ghan Ghan:
    Hmm
  • Ghan Ghan:
I have converted the Headline News forum to an Article type forum. It will now show the top 20 threads with more detail of each thread.
  • Ghan Ghan:
    See how we like that.
  • The Helper The Helper:
I do not see a way to go past the 1st page of posts on the forum though
  • The Helper The Helper:
It is OK though for the main page to open up on the forum in the view it was before. As long as the portal has its own URL so it can be viewed that way I do want to try it as a regular forum view for a while
  • Ghan Ghan:
Yeah I'm not sure what the deal is with the pagination.
  • Ghan Ghan:
It SHOULD be there so I think it might just be an artifact of having an older style.
  • Ghan Ghan:
I switched it to a "Standard" article forum. This will show the thread list like normal, but the threads themselves will have the first post set up above the rest of the "comments"
  • The Helper The Helper:
I don't really get that article forum but I think it is because I have never really seen it used on a multi post thread
  • Ghan Ghan:
RpNation makes more use of it right now as an example: https://www.rpnation.com/news/

    What do you think Tom?
  • tom_mai78101 tom_mai78101:
I will have to get used to this.
  • tom_mai78101 tom_mai78101:
The latest news feed looks good
  • The Helper The Helper:
I would like to see it again like Ghan had it the first time with pagination though - without the pagination that view will not work but with pagination it just might...
