Some folks like AutoRun; some (like myself) hate it !

You can disable this feature by adding a REG_DWORD named

HKEY_Local_Machine\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdrom\AutoRun

and setting it's value to 0.

note: may also work for 2k - try it at your own risk tho !

Can't you just disable auto-insert notification through device manager? I think it works in 2k like that, and I knwo it does for 98.

uh, my post was dealing with NT4 not 98 .....

NT4 (Server) doesn't have a "Device Manager" it has a "Devices" icon within Control Panel and doesn't show an option to disable cd autorun; hence the necessity for a registry tweak.

As for using this tweak with 2k, I did say that I didn't know if it would work or not. However, a bit of research via the M$ Knowledge Base (Q319287) recommends the usage of the following registry key for disabling cd autorun in 2k:

A value of 0xb5 in the following registry key turns off the AutoRun feature for CDs:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\NoDriveTypeAutoRun
