so i have a really old laptop that i was reformating because it was virusf***ed, so i wanted to install windows xp or try to install my beta copy of windows 7
here is what i did:
-put in windows xp disc
-followed instructions for installing
-reformatted the the HDD for a new installation
-stopped there, and took out the xp disk
-put in the windows 7 disk after the computer booted up and asking for system disk
-after putting in the disk it still asked for the system disk
-took out the windows 7 disk and tried the xp disk
-that failed, it still aked for the system disk after i already put into the drive

is it possible that i made it to where the dvd drive does not work by formatting the whole computer?
or is there something else wrong?

the laptop is a TOSHIBA SATELLITE 2615DVD if that helps.
thank you

You're booting from the harddisk instead of the optical drive.

In your BIOS, configure the correct drive order and try again. Some systems have an option "F12 for boot drive" or similar key, which allow one-time boots from another drive than the default.
