> they can only interbreed among their race

Hm...

Have a look at your parents.
Now look at yourself.

Do you think that was planned from the beginning?

And that's real life.
Here, we're talking about a fantasy game.

Well, yes, Hydra + Hydra pretty much calls for the result to be a Hydra too...
But, a Spider and a Hydra... could be anything really. Maybe not a Troll.

Anyway, decide on two or three different possible results for every combination and choose one at random.
Doesn't have to be any realistic.
A simple "it's fun" will do... :p

Interbreeding between multiple races....

PROS:
More interesting as there's more variety
Less restricting as your champions can always breed together

CONS:
I would need to make a whole ton of races and make a complex "web" of a+b=c to make it interesting
Less serious & far less realistic, might push it over the "cRaZyBrEeDiNgWaRz" line :p

What do people think would be more fun?

Actually, I would go with a + b = random of (a, a, b, b, c, d)

As in, there's a slightly higher chance the "child" will look like one the "parents", but, it might just look very differently.
Unless both parents are the same, which leaves no choice (well, to keep it simple(r)).

The main theme of this map is breeding, right? :p

Eh, I think making parents of different races able to breed and produce totally different offspring is already pushing it on the crazy aspect... adding randomness to what the offspring is is too far IMO.

>The main theme of this map is breeding, right? Yes, but just like a real-world breeder breeds horses together to produce a champion racer. They can breed a horse and a donkey to get a mule, but the mule can't produce fertile offspring itself, and horses and donkeys are very similar (same species etc)

Bump

A summary of what I still need opinions on, in order of importance.

1. Interbreeding or not.
2. The three (if no to above) or more (if yes) races of beasts that the players can breed.
3. A good name for the map.

Also, new ideas are welcome (although I may not implement them for a while as I'm trying to get a beta of this map on BNet)

...bump...

I really like the idea of having a lot of races, but without interbreeding, it might be restricting (as you are somewhat forced to pick one race and stick to it). Still, I don't really like the idea of interbreeding, so I think I'll make it so you can "trade in" your beasts with a randomly generated but similar beast of a different race. Does anyone else have any alternate ideas to this?

Also, I went through the unit models and picked out the ones I like. Here are the top 38 (!) choices (Name . . . . "Officially" called; alternate; alternate...):

Critters (Dog, Pig, Worm, ...) are not really a good choice.
Most to all only have the most basic animations: stand, walk and death.

At the very minimum, they also need an attack and a spell animation.

Well the Pig I have on there is a Spirit Pig, which has plenty of animations. Don't know why I added dog, though, and I didn't realize the Dune Worm doesn't have any animations :(

Also, I've decided that "trading in" is a bad idea. I think I'll make it so, for a fee, you can buy a potion or something that allows multiple races to breed together, but the offspring will ALWAYS be like one of the parents (you get to chose) That allows multiple races to breed together, with a fee, which is actually a good thing I think, but without the unrealism of getting a totally different child (or if it was similar that would just be too many races)
