Targetting an Open Gate

I'm currently using an ability to open closed gates. There's a lot of gates in my map and multiple players can open/close gates. I have no problem targetting a gate with a spell that is closed, but I can't target open gates. Any suggestions?

You could make them two units, and have them morph between each unit by an ability.
One unit has the open animations and has an open pathing (or no pathing, but depends on if you have a wall connected to it or not) and the closed gate has the closed animation and the actual gate pathing.
