tick marks above unit

How do you place tick marks above a unit? i have vehicles and i want to be able to reveal how many units are contained within by way of showing tick marks above the vehicle(such as in command an conquer generals in which there are tick marks above a vehicle to reveal the level of the unit) ive seen this done on a version of broken alliances; units that have gained significant experience gained tick marks above their model. How could i do this?
