Please , the only way this will create a black hole is that 1 screw will fall off and that is like 0.00000001% chance this will happend

It's a sad world in deed when the voice of reason sounds just as ridiculous and under-educated as the voice of anarchy.

The safety is assumed based on what we know, and we are performing this experiment because we don't know everything. So it would be irresponsible to refute that there are possibilities that we are unaware of, or uncertain of.

Now, with that said, the odds are probably astronomical, and it's not worth worrying over every little thing. There was a possibility that the atom bomb could have destroyed the earth.

Sit back and look at the destructive capabilities of nature. Hurricanes? shit, thats natures equivalent of throwing a stone at a truck.

Super volcanic activity? yellow stone national park is a good example of a super volcano, humanity would survive but the resulting ice age would probably kill a good sized chunk of us.

Next worst up on the list? an asteroid or comet collision. We monitor about 3% of the sky when it comes to this department, if we could predict it, we could prevent it, but 3% is a very small vision, and the universe is very very big.

The earth periodically switches its north and south polls, they gradually get weaker and weaker. what does this mean for us? the earths natural magnetic fields will be weakened and we will be exposed to all sorts of cosmic nightmares. When will this happen next? guess what, we are over-due.

After that? gamma ray burst from the creation of a black hole, could happen at any time, from any of our neighboring stars. highly unlikely, but incredibly destructive.

Shit, when a star explodes (depending on the type) they release a destructive shockwave, we've monitored several of these terrifying events just outside our own galaxy, if it happened within our galaxy, well i dont think an underground bunker would save your sorry ass.

This is all based off memory, so im sure there are some discrepancies, but i assure you, there is far too many terrifying destructive forces in this world, and worrying about every single one will kill you.

If nature can create a black hole, so can we.

Not exactly. When you think about it, you need something THE SIZE OF A RED GIANT squashed into a tiny dot about the size of a marble. Our planet is not even 1/1000th the size of one, so I doubt that it would be possible to create one here on earth.

No giganticous loads of mass packed into a small amount of space = no black hole

i think they don't get anything out of that experiment, the atoms will properly just fusionate and do some damage somehow. i don't know i think that i just do.

there exist small ones aswell

And they thought a nuclear weapon would destroy the Earth. We'll have to wait and see.

CERN wouldn't create a machine that might kill everyone. Anyway, collisions many times as powerful happen every day in our atmosphere.
Wait, the LHC already started up this morning. I'm not dead.

First it was Y2K. If this doesn't go through, there's 2012, global warming, big bang, and possible god sending jesus to kick our ass.

But in all seriousness, I have read a few articles that do say it will indeed create 'pretty much' tiny black holes, but that last for less than a second. Meaning it will be completely harmless.

The sun sends stuff that travel faster than the speed of light and we don't die (Since atoms will be colliding at the speed of light)

How long does a black hole need? A second is a long time.

well, if a black hole can suck light into it, would it not be reasonable to assume that anything within a light second of the micro-black hole would be sucked in? or am i over-simplifying things here?

It's still possible to create one.

TBH; Yes, it is possible to create one. But why the hell are we worried about black holes and crap? We want to get out of Earth and find out how to take advantage of the final frontier. If you like it or not, if we all die (which is highly improbable) because of the LHC, then whatever. Thats not going to stop people from trying to advance further.

I don't want to read long articles nor see documentaries. Can anyone explain to me (or us) what this "God Particle" would do or help us (or scientists) in/with?

I just realized something though. Either we are WAY off topic, or Crusher (known for bad grammar :p) meant Big Bang as in the Collider lol. Which we have another thread for? >_<

Yes. Only particles that enters the event horizon of the theoretical black hole would be sucked in (note that particles outside of the event horizon still is pulled towards the black hole, but they might or might not enter it depending on their speed and direction). I had some fancy calculations here before but I ended up with a event horizon smaller than the Planck length which made me believe that I did something wrong somewhere :p
Either way, you could fire a black hole of that size straight through your head and you would both survive and not notice a thing. If you are extremely unlucky you might get brain cancer.

The fear mongers really "hope" for an unknown quantum effect that allows rapid growth of a mini black hole instead of the current most popular theory of rapid evaporation.

>Can anyone explain to me (or us) what this "God Particle" would do or help us (or scientists) in/with?
Base science, eg it will help "us" understand things better but wont have any direct useful side effects. The grid (aka Internet v.2) they created is rather cool anyway :p

Oh ok, thanks :p

I have another question xD

Since black hole suck particles (which is mass correct?) and black holes dissapear, that means that we can destroy matter?

Signatures can be edit in your account profile. As for the old stuffs, I'm thinking it's because Blizzard is now under Microsoft, and because of Microsoft Xbox going the way it is, it's dreadful.

Crazy how much 3d printing has come in the last few years. Sad that it's not as easily modifiable though
  • Varine Varine:
I bought an Ender 3 during the pandemic and tinkered with it all the time. Just bought a Sovol, not as easy. I'm trying to make it use a different nozzle because I have a fuck ton of Volcanos, and they use what is basically a modified volcano that is just a smidge longer, and almost every part on this thing needs to be redone to make it work
  • Varine Varine:
Luckily I have a 3d printer for that, I guess. But it's ridiculous. The regular volcanos are 21mm, these Sovol versions are about 23.5mm
  • Varine Varine:
So, 2.5mm longer. But the thing that measures the bed is about 1.5mm above the nozzle, so if I swap it with a volcano then I'm 1mm behind it. So cool, new bracket to swap that, but THEN the fan shroud to direct air at the part is ALSO going to be .5mm to low, and so I need to redo that, but by doing that it is a little bit off where it should be blowing and it's throwing it at the heating block instead of the part, and fuck man
  • Varine Varine:
I didn't realize they designed this entire thing to NOT be modded. I would have just got a fucking Bambu if I knew that, the whole point was I could fuck with this. And no one else makes shit for Sovol so I have to go through them, and they have... interesting pricing models. So I have a new extruder altogether that I'm taking apart and going to just design a whole new one to use my nozzles. Dumb design.
  • Varine Varine:
Can't just buy a new heatblock, you need to get a whole hotend - so block, heater cartridge, thermistor, heatbreak, and nozzle. And they put this fucking paste in there so I can't take the thermistor or cartridge out with any ease, that's 30 dollars. Or you can get the whole extrudor with the direct driver AND that heatblock for like 50, but you still can't get any of it to come apart
  • Varine Varine:
Partsbuilt has individual parts I found but they're expensive. I think I can get bits swapped around and make this work with generic shit though
