WinXP Issue: 100%CPULoad after Logon

Dear The Helper forums,

So, I'm back with another annoying issue that came on me out of nowhere.
I have a serious issue with my stationary computer (which im not using to write this btw) and it just started unprovokedly when i was browsing the internet (NO not porn/virus sites ;P).

All of the sudden the computer all but froze. I'm able to move the cursor around, but it takes around 1-2 minute to for example get up the "windows home" menu. I restarted the computer, and the problem was/is still there.

Here are some details of my setup before i continue:
Windows XP Professional SP3
Asus p5q pro mobo,
Corsair Powersupply,
ATI 4850hd graphics,
Intel core2duo e8400 (3ghz),
2gb RAM
----

MAJOR ADD: EVERYTHING WORKS PERFECTLY NORMAL IN SAFE MODE

So, continuing on the issue, when i start my computer all seems fine and dandy. But when after I logon trouble shows it ugly face. It approximately 5minutes for EACH process i have on startup to start. I click ctrl+alt+delete and after around 1minute i get up the menu, then it takes another minute for the actual taskmanager to pop up.

The taskmanager tells me that the CPU is running at 100% load. I check the process tree (which takes like a minute to get to) and NO process in the list is even gulping a SINGLE percent!

Navigating around takes forever. The only thing that is as fast as usual is the taskbar pop up (I set the taskbar to auto-hide(Oh but sometimes even the taskbar takes forever to show, like its glued to the side or something)). The "load LED" on the chassi hardly blinks and I rarely hear the processor/HD work.

What the H3LL is wrong with my computer? :banghead:
I think i can repeat that this occured without ANY changes in software or hardware whatsoever! Mr. "Unexplainable Computer Problem" seems to like me a lot, because he KEEPS SHOWING UP!

Please help me, helpers!!

Yours faithfully
Grommo

UPDATE ADD: Now, after waiting about 40 minutes since logging on, the cpu usage has dropped to 50-60%. Navigation is slightly faster, but the process tree still doesnt show any gulping processes. And when i try to start an application (CCleaner for instance) it still takes lightyears (it hasn't popped up yet...).

I know that you say that you weren't browsing any websites with viruses at the time, but it would still be worth doing a virus scan anyway. See if that can help the problem.

Else, try starting in Safe Mode and see if that is any faster.

Hey, thanks for helping out!

Safe mode works AWESOMELY well. Just as normal windows would do well.. uh normally. I did registry scans with WinAso, CCleaner, Comodo system cleaner and Spybot S&D and found some registry errors i deleted. I also removed several unnecessary processes from the startuplist. After that I chose to try normal mode again, but it was just as crappy as before.

ADD: Oh I'll try a virus scan with my Comodo AV suite just because you said so... I'm not having high hopes for it though!
ADD2: Comodo is giving me a crappy error when i try to start a scan. Probably some conflict in safe mode or something. I'm running a spybot scan right now, and i'll download a portable virus scanner on this computer and transfer with an USB memory.

ADD3(getting tired here...): As it works flawlessly i Safe Mode, it has to be something that starts in normal mode, but not safe mode. (Safe mode with networking works as well btw). So I'm gonna try and reinstall my ATi video drivers and see if that helps.
Otherwise, could it perhaps be a startup service thats causing the problem?

Check msconfig and see what starts on startup. Try disabling everything that is non-essential.

How come you're so into recipes lately? Never saw this much interest in this topic in the old days of TH.net

Hmm, how do I change my signature?
  • tom_mai78101 tom_mai78101:
Signatures can be edit in your account profile. As for the old stuffs, I'm thinking it's because Blizzard is now under Microsoft, and because of Microsoft Xbox going the way it is, it's dreadful.

@tom_mai78101 I must be blind. If I go on my profile I don't see any area to edit the signature; If I go to account details (settings) I don't see any signature area either.

You can get there if you click the bell icon (alerts) and choose preferences from the bottom, signature will be in the menu on the left there https://www.thehelper.net/account/preferences

Crazy how much 3d printing has come in the last few years. Sad that it's not as easily modifiable though
  • Varine Varine:
I bought an Ender 3 during the pandemic and tinkered with it all the time. Just bought a Sovol, not as easy. I'm trying to make it use a different nozzle because I have a fuck ton of Volcanos, and they use what is basically a modified volcano that is just a smidge longer, and almost every part on this thing needs to be redone to make it work
  • Varine Varine:
Luckily I have a 3d printer for that, I guess. But it's ridiculous. The regular volcanos are 21mm, these Sovol versions are about 23.5mm
  • Varine Varine:
So, 2.5mm longer. But the thing that measures the bed is about 1.5mm above the nozzle, so if I swap it with a volcano then I'm 1mm behind it. So cool, new bracket to swap that, but THEN the fan shroud to direct air at the part is ALSO going to be .5mm to low, and so I need to redo that, but by doing that it is a little bit off where it should be blowing and it's throwing it at the heating block instead of the part, and fuck man
  • Varine Varine:
I didn't realize they designed this entire thing to NOT be modded. I would have just got a fucking Bambu if I knew that, the whole point was I could fuck with this. And no one else makes shit for Sovol so I have to go through them, and they have... interesting pricing models. So I have a new extruder altogether that I'm taking apart and going to just design a whole new one to use my nozzles. Dumb design.
  • Varine Varine:
Can't just buy a new heatblock, you need to get a whole hotend - so block, heater cartridge, thermistor, heatbreak, and nozzle. And they put this fucking paste in there so I can't take the thermistor or cartridge out with any ease, that's 30 dollars. Or you can get the whole extrudor with the direct driver AND that heatblock for like 50, but you still can't get any of it to come apart
  • Varine Varine:
Partsbuilt has individual parts I found but they're expensive. I think I can get bits swapped around and make this work with generic shit though
