I was reading through the forums and came across the point that the Iron Soldier 3 game was withdrawn from public sale due to incompatibility issues with some/earlier NUON players, and in particularly with the Toshiba SD-2300. Just what are the exact details on this?

I ask as the first NUON game i ever got was IS3, then i got a CIB Toshiba SD-2300 player (with TNT) and remember playing it before getting my Samsung N-501. I unpacked my Toshiba model today, loaded up Iron Soldier 3, and lo and behold...

I've never had any issues with IS III on my SD2300 it has always played just as flawless as on my N501

I do not have any links to sources but I recall that it was a problem with only some of the sd2300's. They pulled it just to be safe. I remember that Eclipse, the developer was having trouble recreating the error because it was not on all models. I bet the Dragon Shadow guy would know more about this :)

On a side note, that's quite a collection of Xbox 360's you've got there, Serb ;)
Hehe, thanks K3V, but that's nothing - i have another 15 boxed 360's in the spare room :D

Not sure if you remember from old JSII days, but i've always been into console LAN/local link-up play (hence all my previous Battlespheres & network adapters). If you check my personal twitter background pic, you will see the themed LAN events that i do with them ;) https://twitter.com/Serblander

As for those in the pic: GoW Slim (PAL), GoW Elite (PAL), Halo 3 (US) & Blue Dragon (Jap). The 360 Command Centre is GO!!! lol

Now, on a totally unrelated note: what the hell do you know about these recalled Iron Soldier 3 discs?! :p

The ones that I mailed out? There's a cool back story to those.

I had made pretty good contacts with VM Labs over the years and when the whole IS3 release/recall thing was happening one of the guys contacted me and asked if I'd be willing to distribute some discs as an act of goodwill to the community.

I agreed and they sent me some spindles of discs and those white mailers and asked that I write "Demo, Not for Resale" on all the discs. I believe they reimbursed me for the postage but I can't really remember.

Needless to say I'm glad I did it since so few boxed copies actually ever surfaced!

Wow! That was really nice of the guy! Do you by chance remember the name of said person? Imagine if there was an awesome person like that for every defunct system how much that would go towards keeping their work, system (and memories) alive...

It was a damn shame they recalled the game because there was nothing really wrong with it except an incompatibility with a small amount of players. Its a great game too!

Of those players reported to be incompatible with IS3, where they ONLY some Toshiba models or were there other models implicated as well, like the Samsung Extiva N-2000 (or even any Samsung N-5xx models)?

That I don't know.

Iron Soldier 3 works fine on my Toshiba SD-2300.

It's the Extiva N-2000 that has problems playing the game.

It works on my N2000 system, but it does freeze occasionally.

There's another theory that the "recall" had something to do with 9-11, as the goal of some of the levels in the game was to knock down buildings, and they felt it would have been controversial, or something. I don't know how much truth there is to that theory.

There were rumors of a 'fixed' version of the game being developed, but VM Labs went belly up shortly after the recall so it never happened.

That's VERY interesting! Could be possible as i remember they took out all World Trade Centre shots from the Spider-Man movie (and early commercials) after 9-11. Then again it was released on the PS1 at the same time. Still, the fact that they had to recall it in any case makes it more plausible. Do you remember where you heard or read that? Would love to know if it had some 'official' truth to it.

I could be wrong but I thought the ps3 version came later on.

I don't have any good info about the incompatibility regarding IS3 or why it was pulled. I never heard the 9/11 angle.

Wasn't there a firmware revision from the first NUON players? The interim between the Aries 2 and 3 processors? I think the first or second player either the toshiba or the extiva had 2 different versions of the firmware in them. I know the problem was specific to the player. I was keeping tabs on this stuff when I was editing the NUON category in dmoz and the Eclipse people were trying to figure out was wrong and could not recreate the error until they were shipped a unit where they could recreate it. By the time they worked it out the NUON was dead.

Signatures can be edit in your account profile. As for the old stuffs, I'm thinking it's because Blizzard is now under Microsoft, and because of Microsoft Xbox going the way it is, it's dreadful.

Crazy how much 3d printing has come in the last few years. Sad that it's not as easily modifiable though
  • Varine Varine:
I bought an Ender 3 during the pandemic and tinkered with it all the time. Just bought a Sovol, not as easy. I'm trying to make it use a different nozzle because I have a fuck ton of Volcanos, and they use what is basically a modified volcano that is just a smidge longer, and almost every part on this thing needs to be redone to make it work
  • Varine Varine:
Luckily I have a 3d printer for that, I guess. But it's ridiculous. The regular volcanos are 21mm, these Sovol versions are about 23.5mm
  • Varine Varine:
So, 2.5mm longer. But the thing that measures the bed is about 1.5mm above the nozzle, so if I swap it with a volcano then I'm 1mm behind it. So cool, new bracket to swap that, but THEN the fan shroud to direct air at the part is ALSO going to be .5mm to low, and so I need to redo that, but by doing that it is a little bit off where it should be blowing and it's throwing it at the heating block instead of the part, and fuck man
  • Varine Varine:
I didn't realize they designed this entire thing to NOT be modded. I would have just got a fucking Bambu if I knew that, the whole point was I could fuck with this. And no one else makes shit for Sovol so I have to go through them, and they have... interesting pricing models. So I have a new extruder altogether that I'm taking apart and going to just design a whole new one to use my nozzles. Dumb design.
  • Varine Varine:
Can't just buy a new heatblock, you need to get a whole hotend - so block, heater cartridge, thermistor, heatbreak, and nozzle. And they put this fucking paste in there so I can't take the thermistor or cartridge out with any ease, that's 30 dollars. Or you can get the whole extrudor with the direct driver AND that heatblock for like 50, but you still can't get any of it to come apart
  • Varine Varine:
Partsbuilt has individual parts I found but they're expensive. I think I can get bits swapped around and make this work with generic shit though
