--( TERRAINING CONTEST 2 )-( theme: AFTERMATH )--

Makes me wish warcraft still worked on my PC, dang i needa get that fixed, and above all of that i am jelious this sounds like a fun one :'( thanks everyone for choosing the worst time for me, lol well ill try not to get worked up, good luck everyone and have fun :D

Guys, please specify your name in the e-mails. I can't guess your TH.net names.

So far I got 2 unnamed submissions and I will not include them if you don't respond to my e-mails replies, telling me your names.

Bahhhh, I thought this time the terrain contest would include imports :(

Their totally needs to be a terrain contest where the main focus is that the terrain is actually playable, considering that map making is the reason terraining exists... imports don't make a terrain, they only enhance it.

....maybe next time

Oh snap, you remind me to post my map D

Pff. Playable shit is boring. You have to do pathing and all that crap, which is really restricting if you want to make buildings...

hey smith_s9 ,

will you crop it again like last time.. or we will crop it?

I don't see how it's restrictive... it'd just mean you would have to make a better effort at actually planning out your terrain instead of just spraying doodads about.

I think whats really boring and restrictive is the consistant 'blizzard models only' rule of these terrain contests. I don't understand why people stack and flip doodads around to make walls and structures when you could completely model and skin a better looking structure in a tenth of the time.

This contest sounds interesting. Sign me up!

I'm adept at creating playable terrain and calculating pathing for maps and as a terrainer for other mapmakers, but I have lost the skill to make cool terrain pictures, though I did some of those stuff before. This is gonna be a bit of a handicap, but I will do my best. Good luck to all!

You perhaps. But not me ; )
It would just outbalance the contest. This is a terraining contest after all, not a modelling or skinning contest : )

Offtopic: These icons you gave me really look incredible ingame : )
Thx again!

This is the first WIP batch. I am sorry SerraAvenger, but your terrain had your name on it so I couldn't include it. A single person specified in the mail that he wants it to be posted as WIP (except Serra), so he is the only one to get his work posted. The others that sent me works did not specify, so I am taking them as finals.

Thanks for posting my pictures Smith ;)
Personally, I think you need some height changes, it looks flat.
Otherwise it's good!

-The guard tower in the foreground is out of scale: make it bigger.

-Place more debris and corpses in the courtyard--it still looks clean after the slaughter!

-In the before picture the eye is most powerfully drawn to the courtyard flower display, in the after, there is no one focal point that draws the eye... perhaps, if you reposition the pit lord to look at the camera instead of away it would help.

News portal has been retired. Main page of site goes to Headline News forum now
  • The Helper The Helper:
I am working on getting access to the old news portal under a different URL for those that would rather use that for news before we get a different news view.
  • Ghan Ghan:
    Easily done

https://www.thehelper.net/pages/news/ is a link to the old news portal - i will integrate it into the interface somewhere when i figure it out
  • Ghan Ghan:
    Need to try something
  • Ghan Ghan:
    Hopefully this won't cause problems.
  • Ghan Ghan:
    Hmm
  • Ghan Ghan:
I have converted the Headline News forum to an Article type forum. It will now show the top 20 threads with more detail of each thread.
  • Ghan Ghan:
    See how we like that.
  • The Helper The Helper:
I do not see a way to go past the 1st page of posts on the forum though
  • The Helper The Helper:
It is OK though for the main page to open up on the forum in the view it was before. As long as the portal has its own URL so it can be viewed that way I do want to try it as a regular forum view for a while
  • Ghan Ghan:
Yeah I'm not sure what the deal is with the pagination.
  • Ghan Ghan:
It SHOULD be there so I think it might just be an artifact of having an older style.
  • Ghan Ghan:
I switched it to a "Standard" article forum. This will show the thread list like normal, but the threads themselves will have the first post set up above the rest of the "comments"
  • The Helper The Helper:
I don't really get that article forum but I think it is because I have never really seen it used on a multi post thread
  • Ghan Ghan:
RpNation makes more use of it right now as an example: https://www.rpnation.com/news/

I will have to get used to this.
