In response to the recent controversy over a new US law proposed by Congress called "SOPA" or the "Stop Online Piracy Act" that would severely limit some internet companies and sites like Google and YouTube in what they can and cannot allow or even link to, there has been a fairly large outcry from the public. Domain name registrar GoDaddy recently came out in support of the SOPA act, sparking a mass exodus away from them which has resulted in the loss of over 70,000 domain names.
Competing registrar Namecheap has declared Dec. 29th "Move Your Domain" day and is offering discounts on transfers when you use the coupon "SOPASucks" on checkout.

Read more on the news and Namecheap's pledge to donate $1 for every transfer here:

I totally support this. I kind of like how it all went.

It started out with a protest on reddit, if I remember correctly. Around 23th, godaddy came out with a statement that they had received some emails but that they hadn't really seen some effects. Well duh! It's coming in a week.

Anyway, that really enraged reddit and a lot of people took it as a challenge and moved their domains even though they wasn't going to at first. One day later or so, godaddy comes out with a statement that they're no longer supporting SOPA. They also started calling people asking them to stay.

Still, people shouldn't stop moving because of that. I bet they're still supporting it behind the scenes. After all, they helped write SOPA and are even excluded from it. Not to mention their CEO hunts elephants...

I don't have any domains myself but I helped a friend move three of them off of Godaddy. Quite easy to do and Namecheap is giving you free WhoisGuard protection when you transfer as well.

Hahaha.. nice nice But will it change anything?

Did you read what I wrote? They wrote a statement that it didn't change anything(they wrote this a week before the actual day when people were going to move) and then 2 days later(still several days before the real move) they stopped openly supporting sopa. They even called their customers, asking them to stay.

Good post Ghan.

However back in september when Godaddy supported SOPA no one said a goddamn thing. And back then SOPA was even worse then it is in its current form.

current form
The official GD statement is that GD does not support SOPA in it's current form.
So GD supports something that is even worse and gets away with it cause no one is paying any flipping attention..

They get some flak and some competitors jump in and some people FINALLY starting to wake up, make a point and hola GD suddenly does not support the current form..
i keep talking about the current form...

Cause ..Godaddy will SUPPORT this bill when it is final in whatever shape it is.
The SOPA bill has far reaching impact.
I said this before and i will say it once more SOPA, IP Protect , E Parasite.... it's just extreme bad news for the internet.

Let me explain once more how this could affect thehelper.net.

If some retard start spamming TH with viagra posts .TH couldbe taken down for infringing trademarks.
Sounds far fetched ?
For the record and on the record. You people have no clue..

sounds arrogant ? yeah i bet it does..But there is alot going you have no idea off.

Don't believe me ? see i care.

They're most likely still supporting it but it shows at least we hurt them enough for them to pretend they don't support it. There's a new Anti-sopa thingie going on on reddit. They're going to try make two congressmen not get re-elected because of their SOPA support. I am not sure exactly what they were going to do but it was something like that.

The SOPA law has far far reaching impact.
Short version all .com and .net and .org and .info domains ie gTLD's willbe under US law.
I understand the wish for regulation and protection but SOPA is not the solution.
ICANN is not doing the most wonderfull job in the world but it acts as a buffer.
ICANN was created by Bill Clinton as a second choice. The choice was to have the internet regulated by the UN or come up with another solution.
Since everyone and anyone agreed that the internet is for everyone the regulation should not fall under one country.

That's why Bill Clinton appointed ICANN as the regulator....
But ICANN is a thoothless paper tiger (suprise !).
ICANN willbe granted the IANA contract once more and the root willbe in control of ICANN.

But times are changing my friends..
Goverments are slowly waking up.
When it comes to domain names, corporate America still does not understand it.
Goverments do not understand the internet.
But the last 4 years they are finally waking up.

And they want control ..
Control is a not a bad thing imo. If i just look around what's going it's not right.
But there tons of parties involved.

The sad part is that the world does not want to adapt... and that is why we see a push for SOPA.
But SOPA is not the answer. It's overkill.
It goes against everything the internet represents.

ICANN and the domain registrars got their arses kicked at the ICANN 42 meeting in Dakar. The GAC (USA has the lead here) was very pissed off with the domain registrars (think godaddy, Netsol, Enom) and what they done in the past to protect IP/Trademark rights.
The GAC has an importanted role in the multi stake holder model we currently have . But multi is the keyword here and not the dictating.
GAC has put out some pretty strong guidelines that domain registrars have to follow.

But we got like 1800 domain registars scattered all over the globe...
USA laws do not apply to other countries..

See the issue here ??

And here we have SOPA .. to take total control ...

If you have any questions post them here or if you wish to contact me thru email [email protected] .
I been following/studying ICANN since 2009 since whatever happens there will affect the company i work for. A domain name registrar.
Granted we do not have tons of lawyers .. But we keep ahead of the competition and sure as hell know what GD's trying.

Have a great 2012!

I am curious whether this SOPA law will dry out the us-american internet market. I mean, wont many people switch to eu-based domain name providers and such to avoid it?

Signatures can be edit in your account profile. As for the old stuffs, I'm thinking it's because Blizzard is now under Microsoft, and because of Microsoft Xbox going the way it is, it's dreadful.

Crazy how much 3d printing has come in the last few years. Sad that it's not as easily modifiable though
  • Varine Varine:
I bought an Ender 3 during the pandemic and tinkered with it all the time. Just bought a Sovol, not as easy. I'm trying to make it use a different nozzle because I have a fuck ton of Volcanos, and they use what is basically a modified volcano that is just a smidge longer, and almost every part on this thing needs to be redone to make it work
  • Varine Varine:
Luckily I have a 3d printer for that, I guess. But it's ridiculous. The regular volcanos are 21mm, these Sovol versions are about 23.5mm
  • Varine Varine:
So, 2.5mm longer. But the thing that measures the bed is about 1.5mm above the nozzle, so if I swap it with a volcano then I'm 1mm behind it. So cool, new bracket to swap that, but THEN the fan shroud to direct air at the part is ALSO going to be .5mm to low, and so I need to redo that, but by doing that it is a little bit off where it should be blowing and it's throwing it at the heating block instead of the part, and fuck man
  • Varine Varine:
I didn't realize they designed this entire thing to NOT be modded. I would have just got a fucking Bambu if I knew that, the whole point was I could fuck with this. And no one else makes shit for Sovol so I have to go through them, and they have... interesting pricing models. So I have a new extruder altogether that I'm taking apart and going to just design a whole new one to use my nozzles. Dumb design.
  • Varine Varine:
Can't just buy a new heatblock, you need to get a whole hotend - so block, heater cartridge, thermistor, heatbreak, and nozzle. And they put this fucking paste in there so I can't take the thermistor or cartridge out with any ease, that's 30 dollars. Or you can get the whole extrudor with the direct driver AND that heatblock for like 50, but you still can't get any of it to come apart
  • Varine Varine:
Partsbuilt has individual parts I found but they're expensive. I think I can get bits swapped around and make this work with generic shit though
