A cloud of ominous orange smoke has been pictured over a town in Teesside following a gas leak.
Video shows a plume of coloured smoke above a fertiliser plant in Billingham, Stockon-on-Tees, on Friday afternoon. One resident described the incident to local media as a "huge chemical explosion".
Police have confirmed there was a gas leak at the site but said there were no injuries or wider risk to the public. Posting footage of the smoke on X, one resident shared: "Nice plume of nasty looking stuff has just come out of Billingham Manufacturing Plant and now all the alarms are going off (and it isn’t 10am on a Tuesday). Close your windows and doors Billingham!"
One resident said it "sounds like a plane going over". People in the town from as far away as Teesside Airport took to sharing pictures of the alarming cloud of bright smoke, the exact substance of which has not been confirmed.
