Blarg's Gas Planet Challenge!

So about a month ago, I realized that if I didn't buckle down and finish at least one of the maps on my "To Do" list, they would never get done. I'm working on a simple space map right now, and it's almost complete.

But I could use a model for a giant gas planet. Something like Jupiter or Saturn. I've looked on the Hive, and in the threads here, but everything that fits the bill is either password-protected, or it was deleted years ago.

Here's where you come in. If any of you are good at modeling, feel free to send me your version of Jupiter, Saturn, etc. (Feel free to insert the mandatory joke about "Uranus".) The best one -- nothing above 50 KB -- gets +rep and credit on the space map.

I would very strongly prefer that you get your models to me sometime in the next seven days. After that, I'm submitting this map to Members' Projects for beta testing. I can get by on the Reveal/Item Area Detection that's acting as a place-holder now, but I'd like to have something a little more polished, so I can concentrate on play and balance issues instead of graphics.

Thanks for your help, and I look forward to hearing from you!

find and post a picture most like what you want the model to be like.... otherwise you are just going to get alot of spheres with rings around them if you are lucky to get anything at all

you want an model like a big sphere unit, have you even tried to make an big custom unit with model as sphere and make it a scaling value like 5 and then change the tinting color...

arrrgh what the hell I gave it a shot anyway. It was supposed to have a rotating animation but dexport being the bastard that it is first didn't export the animation correctly (it only semi rotated lol), then didn't export it at all. So yeah, it's just a static planet but it does have a portrait cam.

the texture path is just 'gasplanet.blp'

oh and I don't need credit if you use it, 1 unanimated sphere hardly requires that lol

ZeroThirteen, I thought that Member's Projects was for completed maps, not for details about a single trigger/model/etc. That's why I posted here.

X-maul, I'm not sure what you're asking me. A monochromatic "big sphere unit" isn't exactly what I'm looking for. I'd like something with at least the suggestion of cloud bands and ring systems, so the eventual beta testers don't think I've just gone nuts and stuck a bunch of SuperBalls in space. But I probably should have made that clearer at the beginning.

MurderMode, don't be so down on yourself. Except for the animation problem, your model is pretty much what I was aiming for. If anybody knows how to put some spin on the thing -- and maybe make the rings a more realistic color, some kind of light gray or light brown or off-white -- that would be great.

Knight 7770: Will do, but I'm still posting my map to Member's Projects today. I set myself a deadline, and I'm going to stick to it. I'll just have to worry about this, and the loading screen issues, post-beta.

MurderMode: I've given you credit and +rep anyway, because I said I would. (You've clearly won the original challenge, even if only by default.) Hope you're not too angry.

Signatures can be edit in your account profile. As for the old stuffs, I'm thinking it's because Blizzard is now under Microsoft, and because of Microsoft Xbox going the way it is, it's dreadful.

@tom_mai78101 I must be blind. If I go on my profile I don't see any area to edit the signature; If I go to account details (settings) I don't see any signature area either.

Crazy how much 3d printing has come in the last few years. Sad that it's not as easily modifiable though
  • Varine Varine:
I bought an Ender 3 during the pandemic and tinkered with it all the time. Just bought a Sovol, not as easy. I'm trying to make it use a different nozzle because I have a fuck ton of Volcanos, and they use what is basically a modified volcano that is just a smidge longer, and almost every part on this thing needs to be redone to make it work
  • Varine Varine:
Luckily I have a 3d printer for that, I guess. But it's ridiculous. The regular volcanos are 21mm, these Sovol versions are about 23.5mm
  • Varine Varine:
So, 2.5mm longer. But the thing that measures the bed is about 1.5mm above the nozzle, so if I swap it with a volcano then I'm 1mm behind it. So cool, new bracket to swap that, but THEN the fan shroud to direct air at the part is ALSO going to be .5mm to low, and so I need to redo that, but by doing that it is a little bit off where it should be blowing and it's throwing it at the heating block instead of the part, and fuck man
  • Varine Varine:
I didn't realize they designed this entire thing to NOT be modded. I would have just got a fucking Bambu if I knew that, the whole point was I could fuck with this. And no one else makes shit for Sovol so I have to go through them, and they have... interesting pricing models. So I have a new extruder altogether that I'm taking apart and going to just design a whole new one to use my nozzles. Dumb design.
  • Varine Varine:
Can't just buy a new heatblock, you need to get a whole hotend - so block, heater cartridge, thermistor, heatbreak, and nozzle. And they put this fucking paste in there so I can't take the thermistor or cartridge out with any ease, that's 30 dollars. Or you can get the whole extrudor with the direct driver AND that heatblock for like 50, but you still can't get any of it to come apart
  • Varine Varine:
Partsbuilt has individual parts I found but they're expensive. I think I can get bits swapped around and make this work with generic shit though
