I may be interested but don't know that I will have the time to join. The other issue that I may have is that I would rather debate other things than politics...but who knows I'll watch to see where this goes. That's very generous to offer a class by the way.

I think I just want in on a good debate that I can be passionate about. On this forum I think that there may be too many things that we are not suppose to put our noses in - like religion, war, etc, however, when having a debate it may be necessary to draw from or delve into such context. Just a thought.

I took debate class in High School. My teacher was an alcoholic who always brought "special coffee" to school. I remember one time in class he actually recommended a theater to students that showed porn in 3-D, while I frantically raced to write down directions, I could not believe that he was divulging such information - and not using the chalkboard! But I guess people do stupid things under the influence, like think they can teach, etc.

I did get a B- in his class which I bumped to an A-, along with 5 other kids grades when accessing his computer while he was out enjoying one of his "coffee breaks".

P.S. Easy way to make friends: bump their grades. :D

We have an odd mix here because this is pretty much a gaming forum so we have the gambit from the very young to the very old. The majority very young though, I bet most of the people here fall between 13 and 17. The Administration staff does not really reflect the demographic of our forums here. It is hard to have an open debate when you have such a mixed age range. The staff tends to step in and finds it hard to let stuff get "Out of Control".

Yes this isn't going to be anything like Model United Nations
Where we all had to act like the countries we were :p
So you couldn't just insult another person.

Yet I still like the idea on this forum but like i say it only takes one thing to spark chaos and once that spark goes it grows uncontrollably XD

and you can try to make people respect eachother but idk forcing stuff on people usually never works out in the long run

Maybe somebody gets insulted but i don't really think that will be. Maybe the debat will get crappy but that's no reason not to try it. Nobody forces you to take part of it.

When I join a Debate (In school, or anywhere else, including these forums) I expect to recieve thoughts against my opinions. I listen to them open-minded. I see if they have some facts to support their thoughts. If I think they might be right, I find other facts to try to prove that it is wrong.

No one should get butt hurt in debates.

Lession 1 - Preparation
Okey, first I think I should tell you exactly what I mean by 'debate'. A formal debate has set sides with set times when one side can talk. These are done in a very structured way. I am not going to be teaching you this. I find formal debates pointless. Why? Because noone ever does them. Even the so called Presidental Debates are not truely debates.
What I will be teaching you is persuation that would be used in the debate. Taking pieces of information that you have found and using logical conclusions about them. TH debates will be a lot less formal and will be more like an open discussion over a single topic, but thats more fun (imo).
The final thing I must say before I begin is I teach you how to become a master debater (HAHA), I can teach you ways to prepare, attack, and build your own arguement. However its your own ideas that will be needed to win you the debate.-

How do you debate well? A lot of how well you do is based even before the debate begins. This early advantage comes from researching. Even though you think you know the topic, I guarantee you could know it better. Even if you know EVERYTHING about the subject, information you find will have statistics that you can use.
A major problem is people's sources can sometimes be crap. Someone may be spewing off statistics and polls that may sound extreme. If they sound extreme, call them out on it, ask for their sources. Those facts may not have been real, or more likely, legitament. Common problems with sources are location with which they come.
You will not want to be using these sourses either. These are things that you should call people out for and avoid using yourself. If there is no auther or company or any sort of sign of who posted this fact, its probably bad and shouldn't be used. If its a blog page, don't even look at it. If the person or person that wrote the source looks like they wouldn't know anything about the issue, it could lead to problems (ex- Guy Random's page on Global Warming) The main one that people always use is wikipedia (or wikipedia like sites.)
Wikipedia can be edited by anyone and even though it is checked, its not done completly. This makes many teachers dislike that site. I have nothing against Wikipedia and I think it can be helpful to learn about the general topic. However I don't want you to use that in something real and get in trouble for using it. For that reason, I will not include Wikipedia as legitament.
Although you may not use Wikipedia, on most pages in that site there are source lists. These are very nice. Use them. Click a sourse, if that source is legitament then you can use it.

Another question is what to look up. Random facts and figures don't help if you don't know how to use them. Obviously if you don't know the problem you should look it up (ex- Debating over should the U.S. adopt a universal healthcare system. If you don't know the problems with the current healthcare system then its best time to look it up.) At this point you may know what side you want to debate for. This does NOT mean you only look up facts supporting both sides. For every case there are things that are good and bad about both sides. If you only look at one side then you will not be prepared for what is to come at you from your opposition. To stress how important it is to look up from all points of views, I'll use this analogy: What if in war a general only knows his own troops and almost nothing about the enemy? Well the answer is it will be you having to learn how your enemy works while they are killing you.

The final thing to do with your information is to create relavince. If 40 million people are affected by something, and you don't say why it matters or what will happen if it continues, why do we care? When debating you cannot leave any holes or make people play guessing games with your information. You must spell it out. You can also do relevance with grouping multiple pieces of information together and then saying how they all interconnect and what this combination of facts means to the situation.

One advantage you have while doing this over the internet is you can also get information while you debate. However I'd highly recommend you do some of this before hand.

That wraps up Lession One. This is probably the most boring day of the class but I had to at least say this or you would be missing a critical area. If you have any questions or want any help, don't hesitate to ask.

Extra Practice Opional Homework (for +rep)
-Find 3 legitament sources
-Get at least 2 pieces of information from each source
-Show relevence for each piece of information

(if you do this homework, please PM it to me)

Also, you should list that there are Primary Source, Secondary sources, and tertiary.

Primary sources - Evidence (text, video, person) from the event. (So a person recalling WWII (and actually fighting there) would be primary source. Someone living during the time of the War, but not being in it, or witnessed it, is not primary source.)
Secondary Source - Not from the time of the event. (The grandson of a WWII Veteran would be Secondary source. A text book written by a college professor about ancient civilization is secondary too.
Tertiary - Include a bit of both. So a bibliography could contain direct quotes or images from the time of the event, yet the writer wasn't at the location of the event.

Signatures can be edit in your account profile. As for the old stuffs, I'm thinking it's because Blizzard is now under Microsoft, and because of Microsoft Xbox going the way it is, it's dreadful.

Crazy how much 3d printing has come in the last few years. Sad that it's not as easily modifiable though
  • Varine Varine:
I bought an Ender 3 during the pandemic and tinkered with it all the time. Just bought a Sovol, not as easy. I'm trying to make it use a different nozzle because I have a fuck ton of Volcanos, and they use what is basically a modified volcano that is just a smidge longer, and almost every part on this thing needs to be redone to make it work
  • Varine Varine:
Luckily I have a 3d printer for that, I guess. But it's ridiculous. The regular volcanos are 21mm, these Sovol versions are about 23.5mm
  • Varine Varine:
So, 2.5mm longer. But the thing that measures the bed is about 1.5mm above the nozzle, so if I swap it with a volcano then I'm 1mm behind it. So cool, new bracket to swap that, but THEN the fan shroud to direct air at the part is ALSO going to be .5mm to low, and so I need to redo that, but by doing that it is a little bit off where it should be blowing and it's throwing it at the heating block instead of the part, and fuck man
  • Varine Varine:
I didn't realize they designed this entire thing to NOT be modded. I would have just got a fucking Bambu if I knew that, the whole point was I could fuck with this. And no one else makes shit for Sovol so I have to go through them, and they have... interesting pricing models. So I have a new extruder altogether that I'm taking apart and going to just design a whole new one to use my nozzles. Dumb design.
  • Varine Varine:
Can't just buy a new heatblock, you need to get a whole hotend - so block, heater cartridge, thermistor, heatbreak, and nozzle. And they put this fucking paste in there so I can't take the thermistor or cartridge out with any ease, that's 30 dollars. Or you can get the whole extrudor with the direct driver AND that heatblock for like 50, but you still can't get any of it to come apart
  • Varine Varine:
Partsbuilt has individual parts I found but they're expensive. I think I can get bits swapped around and make this work with generic shit though
