Completing a spell idea - Giant Fireball

Ok. Here's my idea for a spell.
Keep in mind I don't know any of the native spells involved with WC3 because I never played anything but custom maps.

Giant fireball. Slow projectile speed, medium arc. Able to target THE GROUND [having problems with making AOE spells... Does initial dmg in x radius [probably 400] and burns the ground for 4 seconds damaging any unit to walk through.

I have decent ideas, just not the know-how to complete them. Gonna go search for a spell tutorial now but thought I'd throw this up here first.
 
sounds like it would be best accomplished by creating a dummy catapult unit that has a burning oil spell, ordering it to attack-ground and adding a timer to it, or you could just trigger everything - but cleaning it up would be a little harder then
 
The only AoEs I actually can keep in mind are multiple things like Rain of Fire, Blizzard, Cluster Rockets, Flame Strike :/
 
I'm looking at flame strike, and not much of the way the abilities work is making sense... Any pointers would be awesome...
 
There is no such spells that fits ur description perfectly... As Rain of Fire, Blizzard, Cluster Rockets, Flame Strike do not create a projectile.... So i think the best is to use Flamestrike with a triggered unit creation that attacks the ground of the target.. ^^
 
Ok, so... This is my thought process... Let me know what you think.

Modify storm bolt to look like a HUGE fireball. Cast it at the ground [not sure how I'd set that up.] and once it hits the ground, eliminate the projectile and activate my modification of Flamestrike.
 
Nope.... Storm bolt shld not be able to target ground even if u change the fields if memory serves... I think shld be summoning a invisible Ladder - type seige unit( Those that can attack ground) attack damage is zero and no collision etc... Then set the projectile to ur wanted 1... good luck ^^
 
Trigger all of it. Base it on channel.

It can target the ground and have an AOE targeting image.
 
interesting how this thread has progressed, last 2 suggestions seem like what I originally posted

anyways, I think that it is possible to do it entirely with flame strike - it has a projectile, (small orb, replace with fireball/etc.), but then a delay (remove this), and then a main damage - you could set this for say 100 damage every .01 seconds, let it run for only .0.01 seconds for your "impact" damage, then let the "burn" damage be your DOT damage
 
Slapshot's idea sounds most viable, but I will have to toy around with it. Thank you for your ideas and suggestions!
 
Maybe you can base it of Cluster Rockets, change the number of projectiles, projectile model and speed and then make another "Flame Strike" ability, that will have the casting time that takes the projectile to reach the ground. So when a unit begins casting the Cluster Rockets, which is your fireball, create 1 dummy unit for him and order it to custom flame strike the target point.

    It is OK though for the main page to open up on the forum in the view it was before. As long as the portal has its own URL so it can be viewed that way I do want to try it as a regular forum view for a while

    Yeah I'm not sure what the deal is with the pagination.

    It SHOULD be there so I think it might just be an artifact of having an older style.

    I switched it to a "Standard" article forum. This will show the thread list like normal, but the threads themselves will have the first post set up above the rest of the "comments"
