Deleting Objects

Hi guys, again!

I currently have a problem with some (not virus) files that just won't be deleted. They also are not in use, which is quite problematic as I don't like random files sitting there doing nothing.

I'm not sure what I can do at the moment, because I'm not sure which programs can help with this.
EDIT: I'm using Windows XP.

Thanks in advance!

If they can't be deleted, they are indeed in use. They might not be "in use" as in they're a program, but something may be accessing them.

The weird part about it is, I reinstalled my computer but forgot to format that area, so they couldn't be in use if the program isn't ran to access it.
What I mean is, after reformatting, they shouldn't be running. Sort of confusing.

some programs (usually viruses and anti-viruses) have some sort of protection that activates when you try to delete them, this is why you shouldn't manually delete a virus file, use an antivirus program to remove it without triggering it, preferably in safe mode or during a boot-time scan or something similar
