DotA??!?!?

I completly don't understand how DotA just suddenly got popular.. If you guys didn't know, it is one of the first maps ever.... but now it just gets popular? I sware, one day, I saw one DotA every........ hour..? Then the next, I saw it two times a list. Then went to like five. Then it completly filled the list. Now, it is starting to fall(if you didn't notice). Sometimes I don't even see it once in a list. But how did it get so popular? It like... killed all my favorite games. :'(
