external harddrive needs to format ARRGH :)

i got a tiny problem people .

My western digital external usb harddrive needs tobe formatted when i plug it in. (tried 3 different pc's)

is there a workaround so i can got those files back ? or a fix ?

Considered running chkdsk on it? (if it's ntfs) Are they readable from a Linux boot CD?

Ahhh. I have the same brand of external harddrive as you. Uhh, I don't really know, I have multiple partitions on my external. What exactly is the problem?

i actually did not run chkdsk on it .
doh ! give it a shot.
