SineCosine & Anachron:

Why do I get the sense you're having a go at GUI purely because you don't use it?

I'm not saying JASS is bad, and I will respect you whether you use GUI or JASS, but just because you don't use it doesn't mean it's bad. For example, you don't see me saying JASS is bad; I mean in my first post on this topic, I even recommended using it eventually; and I use GUI!!!

So quit saying that GUI is crap, and be a little bit more open to its use.

And just because there are no good systems written in GUI, it doesn't mean it can't be done!

I do use it, well, used to use it.
I remember the times I spent clicking and clicking on my mouse.. xD
Kinda' cute, now that I think about it.

I also remember the frustration of being unable to find certain functions that I wanted =x
There is one thing that I still use GUI for, though, cinematic scenes and quests..

Still, I think that everyone should try to learn Jass.
(Even if only because I use it for almost everything)

Lots of...uh...strong opinions in here. Compelling cases were made on both sides, so thank you all for taking the time and effort to try and give me as much information as possible.

I used to do eBay auctions for a living, so I'm pretty familiar with HTML. I didn't consider that to be much of an asset because, essentially, any trained monkey with a cheat-sheet can put together HTML code. All the same, the inclination is there and, according to Sui-Cookie, that will lend itself to Jass. Equally as important is the fact that I'm trying to learn C++ and any experience with coding is probably going to be beneficial.

Thanks again, though, to everyone who weighed in. I'll need to do some playing around for a bit to see what I can learn. After I do you better believe I'll be putting out the APB for artists. As payment for doing my models I'll send you some of my drawings; on a rainy/bad day you can pull them out for a guaranteed laugh.

Most people is glad if they can get +rep for their models or skins. (And, yes that includes me)

aaaaaaaaaaannnddd I'm back.

Three questions:

(1) Can someone point me in the direction of an example of this "damage system" made by a "J4L?" I've seen it referenced a lot, but I don't know what it is or why it's so highly regarded. I'd like to take a look at it so I can dissect it.

(2) Still looking for an explanation on the layout of skins. Why are they all jumbled in the skin file? Is there an order to it that I should be aware of in case I want to make a skin from scratch? I've read through over a dozen skin tutorials and not one of them explained it.

(3) I can't find any sort of importing method in the World Editor. I hit F12 and it does nothing, I hit control-I and it does nothing, and there is no "import manager" under the Module menu for me. Either I'm doing something terribly wrong or I'm completely blind. Explanations?

I've been tearing apart other peoples' maps in order to teach myself what's going on. I think I'm learning at a good pace. I've challenged myself to make an Alice in Wonderland map that has zero combat but still is entertaining, engaging, and has replay value. It's been a slow start because my poorly drawn skins can't find their way into the game. :/

GUI may be easier for the beginning, but switching to JASS (which you will need, sooner or later) will be a pain in the ass because you have the GUI stuff in your head.

Don't listen to GUI users, learn vJass, you will be amazed what nice things you can do with vJass which you can't in GUI.

WHat I can't to in GUI that I can in JASS?

I did not have any programming knowledge to begin with either ._.
I just stayed up and spent 8hours of my life reading and re-reading all the tutorials in that little Jass section to learn whatever it is I know now xD

I remember someone saying to not start on GUI at all..
So..

Yea, I didn't.

Sine, how long have you known about vJASS?

if you don't have an import manager.. something is definetly wrong.. try reinstalling warcraft...

when you press F12, another big box should open up...

(1) http://www.thehelper.net/forums/showthread.php?t=131287 is the link to the actual damage system. The demo map attached to the post might help you use it. If not, ask for help in the JASS Help Forum.

(3) Do you have The Frozen Throne expansion, or just Reign of Chaos? Only the TFT editor has the import manager.

GUI is NOT poison, and it is NOT a waste of time. I've used it since I bought the game when it came out, and I've used it to make a hell of a lot of good triggers that work well. There is no problem with it.

And yes Rob, do start with GUI: hell of a lot easier!

.... Dont start with GUI. I did it. 1,5 years waste of time. Making a long string in GUI is so **** annoying. in JASS =
JASS:
local string s = "You Have Dealt" + I2S(damage) + " Damage"

Signatures can be edit in your account profile. As for the old stuffs, I'm thinking it's because Blizzard is now under Microsoft, and because of Microsoft Xbox going the way it is, it's dreadful.

Crazy how much 3d printing has come in the last few years. Sad that it's not as easily modifiable though
  • Varine Varine:
I bought an Ender 3 during the pandemic and tinkered with it all the time. Just bought a Sovol, not as easy. I'm trying to make it use a different nozzle because I have a fuck ton of Volcanos, and they use what is basically a modified volcano that is just a smidge longer, and almost every part on this thing needs to be redone to make it work
  • Varine Varine:
Luckily I have a 3d printer for that, I guess. But it's ridiculous. The regular volcanos are 21mm, these Sovol versions are about 23.5mm
  • Varine Varine:
So, 2.5mm longer. But the thing that measures the bed is about 1.5mm above the nozzle, so if I swap it with a volcano then I'm 1mm behind it. So cool, new bracket to swap that, but THEN the fan shroud to direct air at the part is ALSO going to be .5mm to low, and so I need to redo that, but by doing that it is a little bit off where it should be blowing and it's throwing it at the heating block instead of the part, and fuck man
  • Varine Varine:
I didn't realize they designed this entire thing to NOT be modded. I would have just got a fucking Bambu if I knew that, the whole point was I could fuck with this. And no one else makes shit for Sovol so I have to go through them, and they have... interesting pricing models. So I have a new extruder altogether that I'm taking apart and going to just design a whole new one to use my nozzles. Dumb design.
  • Varine Varine:
Can't just buy a new heatblock, you need to get a whole hotend - so block, heater cartridge, thermistor, heatbreak, and nozzle. And they put this fucking paste in there so I can't take the thermistor or cartridge out with any ease, that's 30 dollars. Or you can get the whole extrudor with the direct driver AND that heatblock for like 50, but you still can't get any of it to come apart
  • Varine Varine:
Partsbuilt has individual parts I found but they're expensive. I think I can get bits swapped around and make this work with generic shit though
