A schoolgirl starved to death in her own bed after suffering a phobia of dentists so severe that she would not even open her mouth to eat, an inquest heard today.

Eight-year-old Sophie Waller's fear was so extreme that she was taken to hospital just to have a tooth removed.

Doctors then decided to remove all her milk teeth in one go to avoid a repeat of the procedure - a decision her parents claim they did not consent to, and which made the situation even worse.

After the procedure Sophie would not open her mouth and had to be fed through a tube.

I read through some of the comments on the article and one stuck out in my mind, as it seemed to be the only one of the first few viewable that defended the parents, and I have to say, I'm appalled.

Are the parents to blame? Not solely. But in a big way, yes they are. Well, sure they called the hospital. But how long do you think a young child can go without eating? We didn't know she wasn't eating? Well... Then who the hell should know? The doctors that aren't seeing her? They're at fault for your negligence in this matter? I think not.

Your child was dying. You should have known. You were there, and while the doctors should have been, they at least can claim absence. What is your excuse for watching your child waste away and doing virtually nothing?

I significantly blame the doctors for not following the parent's\customer's instruction of removing only 1 milk tooth and all of the milk teeth.

I slightly or more of blame the parents for doing nothing.
* when the child went out of the dentist room all of her milk teeth were gone, she was shocked.
*then she got barraged by the cries of her daughter stating she hates the doctor. shocked again + hurt.

*her daughter refuses to open her mouth due to phobia. she begins to panic.

*she don't know what else to do. she wants help from the professional a.k.a. doctors, so she called and tells that everything will be fine. she got ++stunned.

*she would have wanted to bring her child to the hospital. but she was afraid on how the phobia would react to her daughter. she breaks down...losses hope. <contradiction continues here>

btw wheres the father?. oh yeah. he was saying "we should have taken her to hospital instead of listening to that woman". he prolly also was in panic or working... and now making excuses , worthless.

I still blame the doctors for saying nothing but "she will be fine, I will go there in the next week or next month or probably a year".

they became doctors yet. they don't value life.

Looks like the psychologist and doctors all underestimated the girl's resolve.

I guess in the end the parents are to blame. Did they want their little girl to die? No, probably not..but they let her waste away on the word of the psychologist sitting in his office. This is negligence.

That's terrible. I think everyone involved should be blamed a little. It's all their faults put together that killed the poor girl.

Yea I agree that was doctors fault ..why the hell he did that and I know doctors can't pull out many teeth in same time .. And parents should have done something to..
