how do i combine or upgrade items??

i know there is a way, i'm just not sure if it is through a trigger. triggers are my weak point so i've found it hard to maneuver through them in order to figure this out. if someone could be so kind as to show me an example of how to combine and/or upgrade an item. i already know that i need to create a second version or upgraded item to change to, that's not a problem.

Make a trigger with Event - A unit acquires an item
Then add a condition (preferably in an If/Then/Else, so you can use the same trigger for all your recipes) that checks if the hero manipulating the item being manipulated (keyword there ) has all the items in his inventory. If so, then turn off this trigger, remove all the items required for the recipe, and add the resulting item, then turn on this trigger again. Done!

Edit: Oh for Upgrading, it's pretty much the same thing
You remove all the items needed for upgrading (ex: in dota, dagon requires a dagon of X level and its recipe)
Then add a stronger version the item
Once again, don't forget to turn off this trigger and turn it on after adding the item, because else it will crash because of an endless loop.

Edit2: Seeing as you seem to have trouble with triggers, might I ask, do you understand what I said? I can make an example if you need one.
