Ice Quests

Hello everybody i'm here to tell you about a map I am making right now and the only reason for that is because I actually have been working on it for more than a week so I think this will be the one that gets finished.

I am still a long way away from releasing a playable version so for now I would like any comments and criticism and would love some suggestions.

Updates!
July 29, 2007: I am putting this project on hold. Reasons are that people don't seem to be interested in my map and I can't get them interested, maybe i'm not offering anything new, maybe I don't have a map with potential, whatever the case no one is willing to put out suggestions and I'm not going to bump it endlessly with no purpose. No one wants to pitch in with ideas, what i'm missing, what I can do without, fine. I don't care if this map never gets finished it's letting me learn new things each time. Also, a friend and I are starting to make a game video which will take some time. So I will not continue this at least untill we are done the video or going smoothly with it and have time off.

July 15, 2007: I am working on refitting some spells to be more custom and flashy and, well..better! I found the Fighters skills being lacking in action since most are passive so I will refit him with more interactive abilities and make his avatar better than just growing, everyone likes a good lightshow!

Gameplay
Your basic RPG, choose a class (One of Three) kill some units for experience to level up, buy items and such. However the main goal of my map is the quests that it'll provide. Hopefully I will have made a very large amount of Quests, some optional, others required to move on. For example, Players start off in a town that is right by a waterfall and tucked away inside a large forest with two ways out.

1) You can fight through the forest as creatures spawn and bandits ambush you (mostly low to medium levels).
2) You can complete quests for the villagers of the town. Once you have completed enough and have completed a key quest that is only given through a chain of other quests you will be given an item (this will just be a trigger, so no actual item unless I can figure something out.) that allows you to travel the caves just north of the town (mostly medium to high levels).

As shown in my screenshots (shown below) for one of the bosses, more likely one of the final bosses, it takes several heroes to fight it and they still can't defeat it. This is because they have no items equipped which are being made as needed. Maps that allow you to be godly through tomes I find are lacking in good balance and variations.

Items will be important but they will also be so one item doesn't rule them all, it will take a combination of items and even then there are many combinations to try out. Some bosses will even require a specific item to be equiped in order to kill them, so they wont die to anything as long as you do not have that item.

Heroes
As mentioned earlier there are 3 classes. The Fighter, the Spell Caster and the Marksman (Subject to name change). Each have a max level of 20 and 6 skills including the Ultimate and Attribute Bonus. All skills can be leveled up 10 times except the Ultimates(2 Levels) and Attributes(20 Levels). Through 20 levels you only have 20 skill points to use. I think this will provide some variety into the heroes skill level as there is no level skip requirement (besides the ultimate which is provided at level 6 and 12, which may also change).

Hero Skills
General:
Attribute Bonus - Adds 3 to all stats.

Fighter:
Combat Training - % Chance to do 2-3 times damage. % Chance to evade. (Being modified)
Hammer Mastery - Increases attack damage and attack speed. (Being replaced)
Crushing Blow - Deals X damage, stuns. (Being Modified)
Space Open
Avatar - Ultimate - Increased HP, Armor, Damage. Grants spell immunity. (Being Modified)

Spell Caster:
Arcane Devotion - "The Spell Caster conjures arcane energys to damage nearby enemies."
Healing Light - "Calls forth a wave of energy that heals a target and bounces to nearby friendlies. Each bounce heals less damage."
Arcane Divinity - The most advanced spell currently in the map. "The Spell Caster summons great arcane energies to burst from the ground dealing 50 damage, followed by 25 damage times the level of the ability divided among the units in the radius."
Open
Charm of Summon Sagely Beasts - Ultimate - "Summon a Sagely beast to aid you in battle."

Marksman:
Concentrated Shot - Autocast - Deals X bonus damage, has X bonus range. (Being Modified)
Strafe - Attack multiple targets at once. Deals X bonus damage. (Being Modified)

Quests
Just a quickie on quests, whenever you complete a quest don't expect some gold and that's it. You will be rewarded plentifully with experience, gold and items you can't get elsewhere.

Features
Real lights - Basically anything that gives off light (ie torch, firepit) are disabled during the day and enabled during the night. (Tossed due to annoying lag everytime it kicked in.)
Evolving Abilities: Once an ability has reached a certain level, it is replaced with a new more powerful ability based on the same concept with a couple other bonuses. (Idea)

Progress: [Last Updated: September 20, 07]
Terrain: 85% [+10%]

Looks nice but that cave with forests lordaeron summer etc REALLY don't fit with the dragon...a crystal dragon...in a dirty cave?Bah no! Change the tileset and remove that blue fires, they only lag the game in huge maps or areas with much action...
I suggest northern or icecrown glacier(surely) tilesests
Edit: change the collision of the dragon too, the 5 paladin were just strange inside his huge tail and legs

I've been playing around with the collision, so far to no avail but i'll figure it out eventually. As for extra tilesets, I was thinking about that but I didn't want to get into WEU just yet. Thanks for the reply though.

Also I only call it Ice quests because my name is Ice so if you were also refering the tileset to that then no worries, I want some jungles too.

So far the Fighter is the only one with skills (as seen in the screenshots). But he's not completely finished yet either so if you would like to toss a couple suggestions out go ahead. Right now the fighters skills are as follows (and may change along the line). Also I have no JASS experience so all skills will be normal or trigger based.

Combat Training [10 Levels]: Give a chance(25% max) to do X(3 Max) times more damage and X%(30% max) to evade.
Hammer Mastery (Due to Change Name) [10 Levels]: Everytime a point is put into this the Fighters attack damage is increased by 5 and attack speed by 5%.
Avatar Ultimate [2 Levels]: Basically just Avatar, increasing HP, Dmg, Armor.

If anyone would like to give any suggestions my ears (or eyes in this case) are open. I'm still making hero abilities and am in need of a few quest ideas. Credits will be given to those who make it in.

My apologies for the very long absense of this map but I have finally returned. I haven't had much time to work on it due to school and I don't see much time opening up ahead of me either but I will work on this map as much as possible. Just tonight I got the first two quests started, one already done. The one that's not done requires more work.

I'm not sure if I have any updates, I forget what i've done the past month or so. However I am sticking to my plan of completely redoing the hero skills (as noted in the first post) and I plan on doing much more work on terrain, however it is difficult since I have nearly gone passed my limits for trees and destructables already. Forests take alot of trees to make look decent and such. And the map size is Epic so you can imagine how many trees I needed. I'm workin on removing more unused trees to make room of course.

Like always I am open to suggestions, and I hope more users on this website will participate. I don't gaurantee the map to be the best ever made or anything but I do intend on doing a very thorough job on it before I release it. So please, don't be afraid to give your opinions.

Later on i'll add the current beastery (creatures and other enemies) including some "boss" units, who aren't really bosses, just important for things such as farming or questing.

Can I ask how big the map file is. Because I have seen that Crystal Dragon model on TheHive, and it has a HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE file size. Just make sure it is under Blizzards 4Mb max if you want to host it on BNet

Yes i'm aware of that. My current map size is 2.54MB but i'm sure there is alot I can do to lower that. If worse comes to worse I will dump the larger model files and try to replace them with something else.
