so internet censorship has been in the news a lot lately, we all know about wikileaks, Operation: Titstorm, and some other things going on.

well here's another vid that will hopefully get you motivated to react, talk, do something to stop internet censorship.

cause i dont know about you, but i want my 4chan, i want my wikileaks, i want freedom.

also discussion:
i think this is the governments attempt to take power out of people that oppose them, so they bring in this censorship to take out general bad stuff like CP, Terrorist activities(IE bomb building), and a few other illegal activities. but being a government, they have their secret agendas. they don't want to be exposed for their corruption. the internet is the last free place of mass uncensored information. i mean i could put up a website with info that companies and officials would not want, due to exposing their corruption. sure they say we have free speech but you cant put stuff like that in a newpaper anymore, corrupt people own those, and dont even get me started on TV.

TL;DR internet censorship sucks, watch vid and discuss

is it not a parents job to monitor them and punish them what they do?
i think you should allow them the ability too, but explain to them why not and punish them if they are found doing so.

A five year old stumbles upon a certain website. Scarred for life. What's the parent supposed to do about that?

Certain types of censorship are a very good thing.

I feel you are wrong. Why? Who as the right to say what a 5 year old should and should not be seeing. It's opinion based, and everyone's opinion is different.

A five year old shouldn't be online in the first place, IMO.

I semi agree, however I feel more of that a 5 year old shouldn't be allowed to be on the internet ALONE. If you're supervising them, then it shouldn't happen. A child won't stumble across porn or anything if he's viewing a site MADE to be viewed by a kid, IE Disney.com or something like that. If he did, he searched, and thus, there are ways to avoid letting kids do this (There are addons for FF and IE that make it so you can't leave certain sites for kids).

Any game that is designed for kids won't have links to any inappropriate stuff, and as for the rest, see above.

Well, I live in Germany, so I'm nhot effected directly...

But, sooner or later we will also have this.

I, however, don't like the Idea of having to log on to the internet with my ID o_O
It's just stupid... It worked out for decades, why shouldn't it work out just now? There are and there will be Humans that will offend others or do things that arn't legal.

The first step in collaborating with these people is, listening to what they have to say. People don't just do things because they're bored. There has to be a meaning to it. I mean, I know there is a war in Iraq, but I certainly don't really know why. People keep on telling me, that it's a counter measure against terrorism, though you can't get rid of terrorism. It's like getting rid of Catholics, Jews or what not.

This is by far one of the most disturbing things I've heard so far in this year. I mean, just because communist China does censoring, doesn't mean the other democratic Countries should. Else we woould be no better than a communist state. Think about it.

I agree. Every site that contains content that can scare 5-year-olds should be censored from everyone, including (but not limited to) porn, any kind of foul language, violence, criticizing the government or its actions (if the kid loses trust to the government, whom can he trust?), guns, and news (they got quite a few scary news).

Does it not actually exist programs to do that stuff?
I mean, I can block certain webpages in both my comps firewall and the router.

I think that it is up to the parents to keep track of their kids internet activities and not the government, it would be nice though if every isp had the option to do it for the user.
I still don't think that it is the government business if I where to chose to jerk of to weird porn, and the thing about the government blaming the conspiracy theories that is in some ways a show of poor trust in it's citizens.

I do not think that any government should police, censor, block or in any way whatsoever interfere with the internet. Not one bit of it.
I know of websites that included extensive information on advanced chemistry that were shut down due to the use that information may have provided to terrorists.

There was another website which focused on detailed information on explosives, weapons and advanced chemistry. It was closed down once before in 2004 by a private company called iDefence, under whose orders it is still not known. In 2009, the website went offline permanently. It is thought that it was the work of the US Government, even though the servers hosting it were based abroad. During its lifespan, beginning in the late 90s, several members were arrested (and charged under entirely unrelated circumstances), and at least one died after kicking a homemade explosive device that had not gone off.

The average Joe might well think that it's a good thing that site is gone. But it isn't. The people who visited that site were home chemists, pyrotechnic hobbyists and gun enthusiasts. They were not terrorists. And while the information almost certainly would be helpful to a terrorist, that same information could be found in thousands of other places. Indeed, people have had access to this information for decades. Was there any internet around when the IRA was planting car bombs in Ireland and England? No. Was there any internet around when two college students decided to blow up their physics department with a homemade fertilizer bomb? No.

If the governments really want to catch terrorists, then shutting them out of the internet won't help. It will just force them further underground. They will no longer be trackable via the internet. Police forces will not be able to know when they have the necessary know-how to carry out their plan if they simply obtain it from a book.
Hell, my friend knows how to make a simple explosive device simply from what he's done in A-Level Chemistry (I also figured out a lot in the same class). Cutting those parts from the course would render it pointless. A generation would grow up and the world would slowly run out of scientists as their field of study became marginalized.

That's branching slightly off the point but basically there's no way they can censor the internet without also censoring the real world, which would attract the attention of far more of the populace.

There are programs that do that already. No need for government to enforce censorship unless it's something like inciting violence against people (like a website devoted to trying to recruit someone to kill someone you go to school with).

In that case, your child should be covered in bubble wrap in case they fall, right? I mean afterall, you can't be everywhere at once, so what happens if they fall and you're not there...?

It's not the governments job to censer stuff because kids might see it. Use programs to block sites, make a white-list of sites(yes, it's possible), watch your kid, or don't allow them on the net. Easy as that.

I mean, with that logic, the government should have people guarding your kitchen in case they try and sneak an extra cookie, right? I mean, after all, you can't be everywhere at once... ;)

And there is where my method fails, however. Do you expect me to believe that if i tell a kid "NO" years from now, he will listen? Maybe when im around. But what is stopping him from secretly doing whatever i told him not to. I doubt that the morality of kids will improve down the road, it takes discipline to listen to authority over what you want to do.

Crazy how much 3d printing has come in the last few years. Sad that it's not as easily modifiable though
  • Varine Varine:
I bought an Ender 3 during the pandemic and tinkered with it all the time. Just bought a Sovol, not as easy. I'm trying to make it use a different nozzle because I have a fuck ton of Volcanos, and they use what is basically a modified volcano that is just a smidge longer, and almost every part on this thing needs to be redone to make it work
  • Varine Varine:
Luckily I have a 3d printer for that, I guess. But it's ridiculous. The regular volcanos are 21mm, these Sovol versions are about 23.5mm
  • Varine Varine:
So, 2.5mm longer. But the thing that measures the bed is about 1.5mm above the nozzle, so if I swap it with a volcano then I'm 1mm behind it. So cool, new bracket to swap that, but THEN the fan shroud to direct air at the part is ALSO going to be .5mm to low, and so I need to redo that, but by doing that it is a little bit off where it should be blowing and it's throwing it at the heating block instead of the part, and fuck man
  • Varine Varine:
I didn't realize they designed this entire thing to NOT be modded. I would have just got a fucking Bambu if I knew that, the whole point was I could fuck with this. And no one else makes shit for Sovol so I have to go through them, and they have... interesting pricing models. So I have a new extruder altogether that I'm taking apart and going to just design a whole new one to use my nozzles. Dumb design.
  • Varine Varine:
Can't just buy a new heatblock, you need to get a whole hotend - so block, heater cartridge, thermistor, heatbreak, and nozzle. And they put this fucking paste in there so I can't take the thermistor or cartridge out with any ease, that's 30 dollars. Or you can get the whole extrudor with the direct driver AND that heatblock for like 50, but you still can't get any of it to come apart
  • Varine Varine:
Partsbuilt has individual parts I found but they're expensive. I think I can get bits swapped around and make this work with generic shit though
