More than 100 aftershocks have hit western Japan since a devastating 7.6 magnitude earthquake left at least 55 people dead and dozens more injured.
Officials warned on Tuesday that more quakes could lie ahead following the initial tremor on Monday. Aftershocks continued to shake Ishikawa prefecture and nearby areas, with Japanese media outlets reporting tens of thousands of homes have already been destroyed.
Japan's military dispatched 1,000 soldiers to the disaster zones to join rescue efforts, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said Tuesday. It's feared some people may still be trapped in rubble, with aerial footage showing landslides burying roads, boats tossed in the waters and a fire that had turned an entire section of Wajima city to ashes.
"Saving lives is our priority and we are fighting a battle against time," Kishida said. "It is critical that people trapped in homes get rescued immediately."
