Make a Hero

I want to make one of the normal units into a hero so I can make them level up and have hero Abilities. Can anyone tell me how to do that?

There is no option to convert a normal unit into a hero, you have to take a hero unit, then change its model and other stats to what you desire.

There is. If you have NewGen, when you create a new unit and it asks you to write its object id, make the first letter of the object id capitalized. Then the unit you just created will be a hero.
