I always get stuck at making spells because it's soo boring but I want to get it done so I do it first, i test everytime i add something that im not sure if it's gonna work so I don't forget to test it
What I do before i get started on a big map is a take 5 major steps.
1.Out Line, the basic concept on paper, the details can be shaky but the the idea is pretty solid.
2.Build Version. Basically this is proof of concept, prove to your self that you know how to do the bulk of the game, build it, don't worry if its edgy or doesn't run perfect. Also If you can find (EXTREMELY HARD to Find, at least for me) someone who can look past the fact that its just a build version and can look at the concepts and vision of the game, you can get some good feed back right at the start, before you build your hole game, and have to change it the end.
3.Alpha.Using what you have learned from your build version, I personally rebuild all the triggers here.(Knowing how they work helps keep it organized) The Corner stone of your game. Basically If you were to be making a RPG, the main city, and 1 area for level 1-10. Get feed back. Other Reasons to have a Alpha is people don't jump you as much if it has bugs, and the fact this is corner stone you will want to test it, and the best way to do that is to release it at this point
4.Beta. Start to work on the rest of the map ect.
5.Release. Game is done, might not be perfect but have plenty of game play.
I almost always build a debugger. Basically a command line that will help me debug in the game, Its often only set for the trigger i am working on at the moment but the debugger it self, is set up.
Also...
1.Triggers
2.Models/Ect.
3.Terrain. (Basic outline of terrain i do early on)
The Build Version To the Alpha version is the most important step for me to keep my game running the best i can and organized.
My top priority in making maps is getting the actual THEME of the map. Not the name, not the type, but the overall FEELING of the map. It's more important than you think. The Theme can influence your units, to your gameplay, and down to your terrain.
I am working on getting access to the old news portal under a different URL for those that would rather use that for news before we get a different news view.
It is OK though for the main page to open up on the forum in the view it was before. As long as the portal has its own URL so it can be viewed that way I do want to try it as a regular forum view for a while
I switched it to a "Standard" article forum. This will show the thread list like normal, but the threads themselves will have the first post set up above the rest of the "comments"
