Hi there guys!

I recently purchased an old Casio keyboard, and a MIDI to USB converter. I have Acoustica Mixcraft as a music recording program on my computer. I can't seem to get my keyboard to interact with this program though. Any suggestions, ways to test if it works?

Thanks,
Ozzdog

Check your keyboards instructions manual for instructions on setting the midi port to a default 0 or 1.

Check mixcrafts input and midi allowances. A lot of recording software isn't initially setup to allow midi input from outside sources.

The way midi works in brief, its a universal variable communications device. Each key on a keyboard equals a number value, and in the software (or on the keyboard) each note correlates to that value. Both devices need to be set to send and receive the same values from the same channel.

Also if your midi interface (the usb-midi cable) came with software, make sure its installed ahead of time, and plugged in/out before opening your software its supposed to work with (mixcraft in this case).

My first problem is that its old, and I have no instruction manual.

Its a Casiotone CT-640 (hunk of crap, but never the less a keyboard)

more help is appreciated!

P.S. My MIDI to USB came with 0 software.

So long as your cable is in the "Midi out" the hardware and cable should be in the right place.

Remove other USB devices when trying this out, its a troubleshooting thing, this likely is not the primary problem, but it is a small chance.

P.S. My MIDI to USB came with 0 software.

That's fine, midi is universal, software doesn't deal with midi differently in terms of inputs. Its a controller, not a sound file. This shouldn't be an issue. Software usually opens up more compatibility with newer hardware/software (even then, I'm not sure how exactly).

Which version of Mixcraft are you using? I think 1, 2 and 3 don't support midi recording, but 4 and 5 do.

Also to clarify, you specifically are wanting to play on your piano, and have it record what you do in the mixcraft software. Right?

Precisely this. I was also hoping I could use it to record like I have before using the built in-on screen keyboard (except now replaced with a keyboard?), therefore using the cool sounds on the program.

I have 4.5

So lets do a quick checklist:

Midi cable is plugged into keyboards midi-out?

Midi keyboard is on?

USB is plugged in and registers in your "Devices and Printers" as active?

Mixcraft is on and open?

You have set Mixcraft to allow midi-input?

Mixcraft has had the "Use keyboard (typing) as controller" turned off? This may conflict with your piano-keyboard being the primary input.

What midi options within mixcraft have you edited/looked into?

You have opened an instrument channel and tested playing with it?

You have tested recording to score?

Signatures can be edit in your account profile. As for the old stuffs, I'm thinking it's because Blizzard is now under Microsoft, and because of Microsoft Xbox going the way it is, it's dreadful.

@tom_mai78101 I must be blind. If I go on my profile I don't see any area to edit the signature; If I go to account details (settings) I don't see any signature area either.

Crazy how much 3d printing has come in the last few years. Sad that it's not as easily modifiable though
  • Varine Varine:
I bought an Ender 3 during the pandemic and tinkered with it all the time. Just bought a Sovol, not as easy. I'm trying to make it use a different nozzle because I have a fuck ton of Volcanos, and they use what is basically a modified volcano that is just a smidge longer, and almost every part on this thing needs to be redone to make it work
  • Varine Varine:
Luckily I have a 3d printer for that, I guess. But it's ridiculous. The regular volcanos are 21mm, these Sovol versions are about 23.5mm
  • Varine Varine:
So, 2.5mm longer. But the thing that measures the bed is about 1.5mm above the nozzle, so if I swap it with a volcano then I'm 1mm behind it. So cool, new bracket to swap that, but THEN the fan shroud to direct air at the part is ALSO going to be .5mm to low, and so I need to redo that, but by doing that it is a little bit off where it should be blowing and it's throwing it at the heating block instead of the part, and fuck man
  • Varine Varine:
I didn't realize they designed this entire thing to NOT be modded. I would have just got a fucking Bambu if I knew that, the whole point was I could fuck with this. And no one else makes shit for Sovol so I have to go through them, and they have... interesting pricing models. So I have a new extruder altogether that I'm taking apart and going to just design a whole new one to use my nozzles. Dumb design.
  • Varine Varine:
Can't just buy a new heatblock, you need to get a whole hotend - so block, heater cartridge, thermistor, heatbreak, and nozzle. And they put this fucking paste in there so I can't take the thermistor or cartridge out with any ease, that's 30 dollars. Or you can get the whole extrudor with the direct driver AND that heatblock for like 50, but you still can't get any of it to come apart
  • Varine Varine:
Partsbuilt has individual parts I found but they're expensive. I think I can get bits swapped around and make this work with generic shit though
