Needing some help with morphing units

Hi
I need some help with a question - how can I create a trigger which transforms a unit (that's not a problem) but is:
a) The same level as the base unit
b) Retains the base unit's items
Or better, if there is a way to use a trigger to change a unit's model.

morphing skills like robo-form wont do?
theres no way to change unit model through triggers, only replace them
save the trigger unit level, items etc in a variable
remove unit
create replacement unit at that unit location and set its level accordingly and create item of type saved previously to the new unit
select new unit for player
