No visual on monitor

My friend seems to have a problem with his CPU. At first, he tried starting the computer, there were lights to indicate that the there is power flowing through. So what happens is, there is no visual on the monitor screen. Nothing at all. Not even the booting, etc. However, it was definitely switched on. He tried changing the monitor with various others, still no luck. So whats wrong? Could it be that the wire connecting the Monitor to the CPU was spoiled or something? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Is it a CRT or LCD? And was it plugged into the wall when he tried plugging the monitor into the computer?

Did he make any hardware changes? Might want to try a different cable.

CPU = Processor. Sounds more like a video card problem.

Either the video card has gone haywire or your sound card isn't plugged in properly if you messed inside your Computer (trust me on this one, once i didn't click it in i thought my computer was gonna blow x<) ^^

If you have any computer knowledge, take out his Video Card and put it into your pc, if it works it's something else, if not he has to get a new one.

If it's still under warranty then TAKE it to the shop xD

He checked his cable and all the other stuffs that might be related to the problem and had no idea. He tried troubleshooting the problem and said its most likely the black screen. There are quite many possibilities mentioned in here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Screen_of_Death#The_OS.2F2_black_screen_of_death

He said it is most likely a compressed OS. So is there anyway to retrieve files from a computer that can't even boot up? And is there anyway to repair it like reformatting it?

Download http://www.slax.org/ put it on a usb stick or cd, and boot it up from there, then copy paste and data you want on an external hard drive or big usb ^^

Troubleshooting Tips:

1. Is there a beep?? If not, unplug everything except the CPU and see it if beeps..
2. If it beeps, plug the ram in and see if it beeps again.
3. If it does, plug everything else.
4. Now does it POST? if not, try resetting the CMOS.
5. Does it load Windows? If not, then your installation of Windows is corrupted and you need more technical steps to fix this.

if there are multiple graphic outs, try each one

also if there is a graphics card, is it in the "default" slot? (usually the pcie x16 closest to the cpu, can be found in mobo manual)

i dont see how reformatting would help if you cant even see the bios
