Possible to get a aura effect on the user.

Hi. I am trying to get make an item that when held, gives a weapon attachment to the user, only if the user is not an ancient. I tried using an aura, but it seems that doesn't work because the aura's effect doesn't appear on the user. Any ideas on how to work this out would be appreciated.

have a dummy cast a spell or use a special effect on the target** add to a variable and when he drops destroy the variable
Edit: also make sure you have a condition checking if hes an ancient
